Howdy - my trunk emblem needs to replaced. For my 71 CS, which is the right BMW part Number to order:

BMW PN: 51-14-5-480-181 made of metal if you have the 2 piece unit with the outer cup

BMW PN: 51-14-8-132-375 made of plastic if you have the 2 piece unit with the outer cup.

BMW PN: 51-14-5-081-747 for a 1 piece unit that eliminates the outer cup.

I am pretty sure its not plastic. I assume I have to get the mounting grommets as well.

Thanks!

Jim

That is a one piece replacement.

I have two part numbers for one piece replacement rear emblems. According to my notes, 51 14 1 872 327 is one piece with raised lettering and 51 14 1 872 328 is one piece flat. The raised lettering looks better. 51 14 1 872 747 is for the front.

You should be able to reuse the grommets you have.

Thanks Chris. I checked both front and back. The front is one piece raised lettering and the rear is one piece flat. Interesting. I agree that I like the raised lettering better. This is the FCP Euro part 51 14 1 872 327 with the raised lettering. I think this is correct?

And interestingly, the front emblem sits far flatter on the surface as evidenced here. Do these cars typically have the same type of emblems front and rear, or does the rear have that higher outer ring purposely? Sorry for my noob questions, much to learn Obe Wan.

Originally this is what the front and rear emblems were/ are. Gasket is for the rear

Thanks Keshav. I learn something new every day! Well, my car clearly has one piece emblems front and rear. I heard the gaskets are NLA. So I suspect its best to go with what is there already (one piece part number 51 14 1 872 327 to make it easy. Still looks great with a clean install.

The bases for the front and rear are not the same. The front is flatter, which you can see in Keshav's second picture. The third picture Keshav posted shows the rear, with the rear base and the gasket. You can see the rear base is not flat due to the curvature on the trunk lid.

Many people have replaced the multipiece emblems with one piece replacements. And in the process, many of the flatter front and curved rear bases were discarded.

As to the lettering, Keshav's pictures show that originally both roundels had raised lettering on our cars. If you have flat lettering, somebody installed a flat lettering replacement part (and in fairness to them, its not easy to sort through all the part numbers.

The 327 part is the one you want.

Also, do not try to pry the emblem off from the top. Most emblems push into a grommet. However, some cars have a metal grommet holding the emblem on the car which is very hard to dislodge and you may dent your car prying on the emblem. For these, you need to go underneath and use a punch to gently tap upward on the posts. Also, you may see twist on nuts that cut into the post under the emblem. I had these on my car. These need to be unscrewed.

Great. Thanks so much Chris! This is all making sense to me now! I'll go with the 327 as you suggest. Appreciate the removal advice. Here is a pic of the underside of my trunk with the posts and grommets. I think I can get the emblem off by using a towel to protect the paint and a credit card to slide under the emblem on the lower half of it (not upper as you say). I found some YouTube videos on this. But I am very cautious of these and revert to experts like you (guys). :)

Jim,
I have 3 Roundels for the back and front hood. They are metal with plastic (not raised letter) BMW emblems. They are all 1 piece. The 2 rear ones have different part numbers embossed. The one on the top of the picture is part # 51 14 1 872 328 and has a slightly smaller diameter but is the better of the 2. The posts are the same distance apart. The second one is part # ...327. I priced new ones and if you donate $75 for the one you want to E9Coupe.com I'll send them to you and I'll pay the freight.
Regards, Jon
