New tool box observations...

Well, I analyzed the box thoroughly and here is what I've found: The design and construction are exactly as the original with no modifications whatsoever. The material used from what I can tell is still the very hard and rigid plastic like the original, although the lower hinged shell appears to be a slightly softer plastic. In all probability, the new box will likely crack like the old version, but hey, until then, I will enjoy it while it holds up. Appears the tool holder is made of a softer rubber material than the original closed cell dense foam, so it may not disintegrate quite as easily as the original. Conclusion...all in all, a quality manufactured product that is desperately needed by coupe enthusiasts. Thank you BMW!

240€ @ W&N! Would have bought it locally here in the US, but initially, there were reports that the tool box would not be available for purchase here. US prices vary a bit, there is a forum member here who bought his at a dealer for about $300 and it is also being offered at a well known E9 parts vendor at $395. Guess the majority of the selling prices will fall somewhere in between these 2 amounts. Oh, BTW, I will be using the box for its intended purpose...tools. :lol:
 
Ha - good man - thought you might put it in the house as a biscuit box! I need to buy one - god these cars eat up money like all hobbies i guess.
 
BMW only made 150 of them, so if you want one...you probably shouldn't wait. I got one and, like Bert, really like it.

Let me just show my ignorance here . . .because I am supposed to know this! As I recall late 1974 cars used a style more closely related to later BMW models, will this old style piece interchange?

This is the clamshell style but I think the inside of the trunk lid is the same for 74 and older models. So it should fit.......
 
Appears to be same shade of gray, probably no difference in color. Also, the bottom clam shelll has the same texture as the original. BMW did a very good job in replicating the look and feel of the original tool box.

i took a good look at m5bb's unit. it is extremely nice. i have a very nice tool box and i'm tempted to buy one

Just gave them a call, they quoted me a car club price of $320 (list price $376) for part # 71-11-1-102-916. Is that the same part number for your tool box? Wonder why there's a difference in price. Sounded like it was the
plastic tool box, molded tool holder insert, and foam insulator inset pad.

Parts guy told me that there are some scheduled to be delivered to the US on Sept 20, otherwise it's 3 weeks to get one shipped in from Germany.

Yes, that's the right part number and you need to call someone else for a better price. I paid the same as echappe and got one from Germany in a little over 10 days.
Bert's pictures look at little too tan on my computer. The gray matches the original very closely. No offense Bert.

Do you have the phone number of the source you used handy ? BMW here in LA just quoted me $376 pre-paid with a 3wk lead.
