New Exhaust?

Isn't there a test to check blow-by pressure on each cylinder? How many miles are on your engine because they can go 300K+ for the most part.

Yes I did a leakdown test to find my cracked exhaust valve. Put each cylinder in TDC and hook up compressed air to the spark plug hole (I used a compression gauge hose hooked to a compressor) and see where the leak comes from. Exhaust-exhaust valves, carbs-intake valves, dipstick-rings. IMHO worth doing.

Video of new exhaust

I thought you'd enjoy listening to CoupeKing new exhaust. I have no idea how it was configured, but sounds freaking awesome, not too loud imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tJdcZI5VV0

In terms of configuration, I have no idea how it was set up.

All the ideas here re my engine are awesome. I plan to do something in the Fall. I think my mechanic wants to do the easy thing and simply replace it.

I live a very small town and the mechanics are not that good or eager.

I did notice some fluid on the floor in my garage recently under the tail near the exhaust. I have not noticed it before.

Odd.

Cute video but no Poodle's? And maybe the co-pilot should be taping.I would travel out of your beautiful town for a better shop because replacing engine is not the best if not needed.Did you add a header as well?

no poodles

shall i reshoot with poodles? :-) I didn't add a header. Should I? Laura was taping.

Always the poodle's,we have 3 toy poodle puppies right now that are 7 weeks old and they are so cute that wife's wants to keep them all!
PS I was just wondering on the header.

Scott-

I have a 74 that needed exhaust. It has headers already so I took it to a local shop that has a good reputation. I asked them to make it sound like a sports car. They put two magnaflows and a bigger pipe from the header on it and it sounds like a sports car, perhaps a bit too much. I seem to get a lot of Hondas, Acuras etc. getting all aggressive when they hear it. Then they leave me in the dust…

Sounds and revs nice.

Clock doesn't work.

I can try to talk my mechanic into a day visit to you, he loves problem solving.

Day visit to Sun Valley..

Thanks Arde! Where are you located? I'd love a visit from a qualified mechanic. Here's the new rub: The coolant was 1/2 full last night when I pulled in from a VERY short ride, and when I checked this morning, it was bone dry and nothing on the floor. Now that makes NO sense!!

Yep, clock is dead, but stuck on my favorite time of day: 4:20.

Looking at the video of your exhaust pipe it appears like something is smoking out of it - coolant, oil, or both. Time to find a reputable mechanic to pull the head. Perhaps send it to SFDon.

did not bleed system...

Not sure what that means, but first time I have heard about it. This issue has been plaguing me since I got the coupe. I'd love to be done with it...

Scott,

quick question, after you filled the coolant, did you bleed the system?
s

This is done to get air out of the cooling system, but typically it manifests itself in a boilover and forces it's way out the reservoir cap quite noticeably. The bleed screw is located just aft of the fan blade on the thermostat housing. Warm up the car, preferably park it on a slight incline if possible, and wrap a rag around the bleed slot so when you loosen the screw coolant goes into the rag and not all over your engine and windshield. If your mechanic is not comfortable with this then it's defintiely time for a new mechanic! :-P

It's worth a try but I doubt it. Typically if it needs bleeding it is also overheating. My long distance opinion is you're burning it but without seeing it firsthand it's difficult to tell. Pull the spark plugs and see if they are very clean, often if they are they've been steam cleaned by coolant.

Steve, thanks. Is this likely to be the cause of my problems? This was never suggested. I am going to try this.

Scott,

it probably won't solve anything but it can create funny pressures in an engine ... and considering you in all likelihood have either a cracked gasket or head near the exhaust ... its worth making sure you don't have pressure buildup in the system.

Sorry if I missed the detail, but what did you end up with ? I know you mentioned a CoupeKing system, but which one ? Did you go with the full SS from the downpipes back ? Did you use headers ? What about the center resonator ? Did you use the tail pipe carrot ? He has two rear cans, which did you use ? It sounds nice so it would be helpful to have this info documented for posterity. Thanks for creating the video.
