Hello Folks,
I thought I might post a summary of Southeast Sharkfest 2013 that was held in Boone, NC earlier this month, but before I do, I would like to ask for ideas from the e9 community. Southeast Sharkfest has always been e24-centric, however we have always had an open door policy to owners of other models. That being said, our judging process (which has become quite good) has always been restricted to the e24.
We have always had a smattering of e9 folks who join us periodically, but we would like to make a serious effort to incorporate e9's into our future events... to this end I am proposing that we open an e9 class of judging for next years' event. Our trophies are custom made every year by Phil Parkey and Ben Phillips of Parkey Organ Builders and they are truly works of art worth having (scroll down to see photos of this years' design). I would love to add an e9 to the shirt design for next year as well!
But more importantly than awards, shirts or tangible items, this event is really geared toward creating a friendly, close knit community of big coupe lovers... and I've always felt that the e9 community should be part of it.
As far as I'm aware, there is no "home" so to speak, for e9's to gather - rather, they often join in on larger classic events (which is great too, don't get me wrong). That being said, we would like to create a proper place to recognize the e9 at Southeast Sharkfest. If anyone has any suggestions on how to better involve everyone here, we are all ears. That being said, the following is a summary of Southeast Sharkfest. This year we found ourselves in the beautiful college town of Boone, NC on the weekend of May 4th. Located but a few miles from the Blue Ridge parkway, the Friday mountain drive was looking to be a beautiful one - and it did not disappoint. With nearly 40 cars in-trail, the drive was conducted with the assistance of three police departments and traversed Tennessee and then back into North Carolina where we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway for the final stretch back to the hotel. Saturday we held our Concours, and despite some inclement weather, over 50 6-series graced our contingency location and good times were had by all. Saturday evening we gathered for our awards dinner and raffle drawings at Tweetsie Railroad (and don't let the name fool you, Tweetsie is a historic steam locomotive preservation facility).
Remember, you don't have to have a e24 to participate! To demonstrate, the Dan Erwin Crusty Award went to Layne & Annika Wylie and their most deserving 1980 320i. One of the Peoples Choice awards went to Ed Lyerly and his immaculate 1994 850CSi. Last year our mascot was an etch-a-sketch Subaru! was aquired from Alaska's White Pass & Yukon Railway.
