I can't find a definitive answer, is there a bushing at the top of the back of the accel pedal where the rod connects to? I am feeling some play there and a) how do I disconnect and remove the pedal to inspect and b) is there a part for this I can buy? Thanks.

as far as i can remember

if you have the old version of the accel pedal, which i can assume by the year 72 on your signature, to remove it you only need to remove first the bottom part, which is fixed by two spheric protuberances in the floor, you force it out from those, and now you can turn the pedal around its top axis and thus access the clamp that maintains it fixed there

i do not remember any bushing there but you can easily implement one if you feel that ou need it

Steve - the older style pedal has a rubber piece formed with the back of the pedal. The rubber bushing piece is connected to the back of the pedal with a narrow, flimsy looking, rubber bridge (all integral with the rubber backing of the pedal). This dongle has no separate metal bushing. There is just a hole that the pedal rod slips through A 'C' clip holds it in place. It makes for a pretty flimsy set up with some play, but it seems to work when I step on the gas. Has your old one broken off?

+1
i could not express it better

There is a small amount of slack when I press the pedal off idle before it engages the rod and then returning to idle when I take my foot off, it didn't used to do it but it's now just enough to bug me, so there are no repairable parts back there other than some improvisation if I choose to go that route vs leaving it alone for now?

Nothing is broken yet.

On my car the rubber "bridge" rotted away, so I removed the pedal, ground the back flat, and reinstalled. No trouble since.

check your springs in the system also...
there is one in the pedal assemby, and another in the midle of the rods system, just in the lower part of the block

The lateral rod behind the pedal has bushings at either end. Could it be those ? I know mine are toast. Replacements are available from Mesa Performance.

I haven't inspected yet, but that is what it feels like it is. Will call Mesa thanks.

Bushings

Just replaced the mentioned bushings, a real pain in the A** to install. Good advice from Carl and hot water! They are plastic and tend to deteriorate.

For the record the slack/looseness I was feeling in the pedal was actually a mis-adjusted linkage rod, the one from the firewall to the engine block lever. Adjusted it to take the slack out and now there is no play when pressing or letting up on the pedal. Love it when it works out like this.
