I'm trying to get the horn working on my 72 rust storage unit.
There is a hole in the carbon pin that is empty, should there be a spring in there or any kind of metal contact.I seem to remember a pic of this item with a spring sticking out.

Thanks to all, I love this forum!

Carbon pin

Thanks for the info, I'll hit my local hardware store for a spring and see if I can make this work.
Anybody done this before ,I'm wondering about the round headed pin.

Thanks,
Jim

I just replaced mine , got it from pelican parts under 10 bucks. Not sure but some were riveted it.

Now i think my horns are dead. I hit the horn button and i hear the horn relay. I unplugged the horn and put a light on it and it works. Need new horn's

Carbon pin

Barry,

Thanks, I just ordered it from Pelican.

Must be a common part, I thought it would be made of expensium or unobtanium like some of the other things I'm looking for.

Yep, need new horns or a hearing aid.

Strange that both horns would quit. I would connect the horn to the headlight relay and test it that way in case it is getting little current.

You're right, that is strange. The odds of both horns failing at the same time are infinitesimal. Is it possible that no power is getting to the horn relay, or that its points are so corroded that they aren't passing current (or much current)?

I unplugged the horn and put a light on it and it works.

What works, the relay or the horn? Are you saying that the horn relay sources enough current to light a test lamp? As Arde suggested, it could be that the relay points are corroded enough to pass a few milliamps (e.g., enough to light a small bulb), but not several amps (e.g., enough to sound the two horns). Prying the cover off the relay and sandpapering the points may fix it.
