Has anyone seen original subframes painted a dark grey/green color on a coupe? I have seen a couple on 2002s but never a coupe.

Not a direct answer to your question but the sub frames and rear suspension arms on the E3 were sort of greenish/grey, as well as the pedal/brake booster mount.

My front subframe is a green-grey color underneath the dirt. Almost looked like an epoxy coating in that it felt like it had some give to it.

I just bought some BMW track rods and other steering its, these were also a grey green color. Rightly or not, they are now black.
My subframes are very rusty, the rear which will come off this winter doesn't appear to have any paint left, the front does have traces of grey green under the oil leak protective coating.

On all E3...? My 76 is all black subframe. The obture handful of E3s I've seen also had black subframes but granted, it's a small number. Chris, when did the 2002s change over to black?

Paul's 72 Tii that he restored was green/grey, don't know when they changed but my 69 2002 was black and so is the 69 NK. It might have been a hit or miss thing.

Chris,

My frames, both front and rear, were a darkish grey. Not really any green in it. Photo of the front before restoration. Look at left side of the frame just above the rust for best color.

My '73 CS had the gray on most of the major suspension parts. The last picture shows the parts that are black vs. gray on the front suspension. I was able to take the pedal box to the paint store and show them an area that was the original color and where there was no fading or corrosion and they matched it with PPG single stage. The guy who mixes paint really enjoys trying to get it right so he spent about 30 minutes trying different tints before he was happy.

I'm very pleased with the result and I don't think powder coating could have come this close regarding color. By the way, I also had them match the air cleaner housing and it is a distinctly different shade of gray with more green in it. I have since opted for the B35/motronic conversion so won't be using the air filter housing.

I just cleaned my subframe today, definitely olive green, just like my Zenith air cleaner cover color. Looks like I will repaint this color instead of black which I planned.
