I'm up in Seattle and last month did a one-day racing track introduction course at our local speedway - Proformance Racing School. You can bring your own car - I brought my E39. The guy who was my instructor races older 3-series BMWs, and it sounds like there was a fairly extensive community of people who race these locally. I suspect this car is one of that crowd and thus the reason for all of the track upgrades.
If someone is doing such modifications and swapping such an engine in a car like this, a roll cage is a matter of safety and common sense, because they probably won't be driving such a car to the store for bread rolls or to their aunt's for Sunday dinners...
Rear-wheel drive from a bygone era doesn't forgive driver mistakes.
Every boy becomes a man someday, and it's better for the buyer that such a car has a roll cage. If they lack the ability to control such a modified car with a powerful rear-wheel drive engine, they might not live to see the day they become a man without one.
