    Weirdness in power steering

Following up on this after a couple of weeks. Thanks for the input, folks. As I said above, I drove the car with the power steering pump disconnected, and the darty-ness on crowned roads remained, so it's not a power steering issues as I first thought As requested, here's a photo of the right...

    Weirdness in power steering

Thanks folks for the input. I'll look at the steering box adjustment. In the meantime, the plot has thickened a bit. I was aware that my right front tire has a bit of asymmetrical wear on the inside edge. I just checked the specs from the last time I had a commercial alignment, and the right...

    Weirdness in power steering

UPDATE: I drove the car this morning with the power steering pump disconnected, and to my surprise, it doesn't change what I feel in terms of the car feeling darty on crowned roads. So I guess this is either an alignment issue or a steering box issue.

    Weirdness in power steering

For the 35 years I've owned my '73 3.0CSi, the steering has never been silky-smooth and centered like it is on my Bavaria. I don't believe this is a mechanical play issue or an alignment issue. I've been through the steering and suspension, and replaced center track rod, tie rods, idler...

    The 13* E9s at The Vintage 2021

I'm surprised no one's posted this yet, but here's a quick walkaround of the incredible 13 E9s at The Vintage in Hot Springs NC this past September 18th.

is it worth fitting a 5 speed

<<Rob, The US 2800CS had a 3.45 but all US 3.0CS had a 3.64 so there is no single stock rear end. In my e9 with a 3.45 rear end and five speed 3,000rpm is 77mph and speedometer has been calibrated."" @HB Chris, I stand corrected. I realize now that I made several mistakes: --My 3.0CSi still...

is it worth fitting a 5 speed

Just to provide some counterpoint, the stock rear end in the E9 is a 3.45. Rough round numbers, at about 70 the car is spinning about 3500 rpm. At about 80, 4000 rpm. My CSi has a Getrag 265 5-speed that I installed decades ago when they were cheap, but my E3 (Bavaria) has the stock 4-speed, and...

To A/C or not to A/C??

Look for my posts here on the site, and read my book, "Just Needs a Recharge: The Hack Mechanic Guide to Vintage Air Conditioning." I retrofitted a/c into my E9 20 years ago. There are a few things that makes it harder on an E9 than on, say, a 2002: --If you want it to look stock, you need a...

    DIY - Heater Bypass Valve

Adventures in Grommet Land -- Electric Bypass Valve Installed (part II) Once I’d safely exited grommetland, I worked inside the car and put the Molex connector back over the pins. I then need to figure out where and how to mount the rotary knob. On my car, the kick panel below the steering...

    DIY - Heater Bypass Valve

(This is the repaired version of my post from Jan 16, 2014, with the broken links replaced with directly embedded photos. It's broken into two posts because, for some reason, it's now flagging it as being too long. Never let it be said that I don't love this forum and this car :^) Adventures in...

Notice for all Newbies considering buying an E9 coupe / rust warning / steps to inspection / BEFORE YOU PURCHASE

This is a piece I wrote a few years back for BimmerLife. It's not as thorough as the numbered diagram or the video, but someone may find it helpful. https://bimmerlife.com/2019/06/22/where-to-look-for-rust-on-an-e9-coupe/

    A/C Vent Panel - E3 or E9

Ha! That photo above of the E3 panel is in my E9! I bought it by mistake 15 years ago, installed it anyway, and have hated it ever since.

    72’ Bavaria AC upgrades?

I cover all this in my book. Here's a nutshell of the issues. --The a/c in German cars was usually marginal with R12, and will be worse if it's converted to R134a without other modifications. --Those other modifications are a rotary-style compressor (Sanden 508 clone) and the largest...

    E9 Driver's Door, Poor Condition

I have a rusty door from a 2800CS I parted out decades ago. It has bondo and rust, but in this environment where people cut up several old body parts to try to make one good one, someone may want it. Really I'm just trying to keep it out of the recycle bin. The eBay link is here...

A/C Blower Motor Replacement with Bosch Part Number 0130063013

Hey, folks. My regular writing assignments keep me pretty busy, so I don't have much time to write the kind of long technical posts I used to here, but here's a link to one I just did for Bimmerlife about rebuilding the evaporator assembly in my E9, replacing the blower motor with Bosch part...

    Air cleaner Plug?

My Bavaria needed this plug for its air filter housing. I went to Mcmaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) and ordered the nearest size I could find. It's part number 9600K527, $2.13 plus shipping. It's slightly smaller than the hole, and there's a little play, but it does in fact fit and stay in place...
