I am seriously thinking of going to 16"
What are a set of 4 of the 14 x 7 worth.
Each wheel has a Michelin XWX 225 / 60 / 14 that are old but have a lot of tread left.

When people start having wheel anxieties I tell them to change only one side.
You can never see both sides at the same time so it will continue to look good and now you can have both types at the same time.

Volvo had a stupid asymmetric hubcap once that looked different on the driver vs. passenger side. The designer inhaled too much cement when building his mockups...

Tire fitment question

Sorry to hi-jack

I may have asked this before but on a set of stock 14 inch wheels can you increase the tire size slightly to say 205/70/14 just to give them a meatier look? Or is there a suggested 14 inch size that is slightly wider than stock without having to make any mods?

just trying to think ahead-thanks

I had 215/65/14 and they are meatier than 205's but not as tall so speedo error is less. But that is a euro size and hard to find. But yes 205's fit fine.

Nobody ever answered the first question.
What do you think 14 x 7 Alpina wheels are worth?

Chris and others advocating I keep the 14" wheels, what tires would you recommend for 14 x 7 wheels?

I just bought a set of 5 early Alpina 7 x 14, but as they are a lot rarer here, I don't think you could base U.S. values on my transaction. (i.e. I paid a s***load for them). The only viable tyre that I can find in Aus apart from the Michelin/Vedestein ( $600 +/ $400+ ) classics are Sumitomo HTR60H 225 60 14. There is almost no difference in circumference from 195 70. The wheels came with 20 year old Dunlop Le Mans in that size, and look good, yet to test fit them for front clearance. Has anyone got these Sumitomos or an opinion on them. I really want to stay with 14s. There are a few 195 70 14s about, but none that I would put on the Alpinas

Stan, when I see a vintage car with the right tires on it in person, it just looks 'right' to me. When you go to LRP to see the vintage cars race. Look at the ones that have the fat smooth side-wall Dunlop L's. It just screams, "old race car."

But, you have to decide what's important to you. The driving experience or the look.
The 16's look more racy, and have way more bling. Do you want that LA look?

And of course, what driving experience are you looking for? Are you going to do track days like Duane? Are you going to do hill climbs and autocross? If yes AND you want to keep up with the newer cars, you should
(1) take a Skip Barber high performance driving class to learn how to get the most out of what you have
(2) move up to 16's with some UHP summer rubber, or maybe some DOT R's.
(3) consider a tighter suspension or something adjustable (coil overs and adjustable camber plates up front would be nice)

If you're just going to to quick tours with the E9 crowd, start with step one above and then decide if you want 16's afterwards. If you're not sure, get a set of 16's and stash them away. They're not likely to go down in value.

You should see if another poster wants to trade for a month. They get a comfy ride, you get to experience 16's.

Stan, as the local-to-you guy who will have a set of mint, staggered 16" Alpinas up for sale next week (I'm going back to BBS), I think you should go with the 16s and buy mine though I do like the look of the 14s as John describes so I feel strongly both ways .

Do the 16s look blingy? Eh, I don't think so, but 17s do - too much wheel. Its a personal preference thing though you do get a broader tire selection with the bigger wheel.

You could have much worse problems...good luck with your decision!
