1972 BMW 3.0 CSi - $35000 in central austin

one more picture

Just a final shot- by the way, no real dents on the car except a small one below the rear trunk lid that looks like it happened some time after the paint job which indicates a pretty good underbody and not bondo since there were no cracks at all at the site.

Thanks for the report Peter. Wow on the valuation - one person values their coupe at $35K and another values the same car at $10-$12K? That is a pretty big gap - aka a GULF. No disrespect intended.

I think anyone that gets this car for $10K stole it lol - especially it's been in bone-dry no salt on the roads or in the air Austin.

Cheers
James

Thanks a ton Peter. Did you look behind the fuse box and/or behind the glove box?

Any reason why you didn't drive this one?

I spent a long time with the Blue one, driving, etc., morbid curiosity and I did look in all the usual spots on the white one and it "seemed" pretty clean. If I owned both I'm sure you can guess what I would do :). The reason I put the estimate on the white car as I did is because about 20 months ago when I purchased mine it was in similar shape though no rust on the strut area(s). Of course I did not really know that until it was blasted, but my car was a '74, had less miles, (93K) was an automatic but did have some floor rot and rear valance crunch. My interior was worse so I kind of gave extra points up from what I paid, which was much less than 10K and mine ran well although the transmission mount was broken. I'm sure there are always similar issues on 40 yr. old cars. If it had the original paint I probably would have made an offer on it as I think it is about as clean as any, though "me" and "THINK" do not always go hand-in-hand. I feel 10-12 is a fair spread because it could be a bargain and it could be a rust bucket, but it would take the balance to really find out. If there is any serious interest I could get together with Greg again, it's only 15 miles from my house and a fun drive, but I would probably have it up here for a real good go-through.

Hi Peter -- In light of the fact that it is a short trip for you, I would like to take you up on your offer to look more closely at the white car Greg has on offer. Given that the price is so far out of line, I cannot say that I am "serious", but if the car is pretty solid I may want to try to determine if it can be had for a reasonable price.

Please look at the usual rust locations.

As to my comments about Greg and the inconsistencies on these cars, I inferred from them merely that Greg is disorganized and not intimately familiar with either of the cars he is brokering. I thought other potential buyers may want to know this.

Will do, let me see what Greg says, I may have to meet a friend downtown tonight so I could stop by his house and meet the owner on the way. I'll advise and I'll probably only go into an in-depth if the owner is willing to massively negotiate. I can present you with my information later.

Good luck to all of us :)

On the schedule

Greg is going to bring the White Lady up to my warehouse next week as he is out of town. This is where my lift is and I will be able to do a proper assessment!

Price has been adjusted to 25K OBO on the white one, still quite high I think as we will see if 4320328 sells at 25 +- on eBay in about an hour and 1/2.

So let me see if I have this straight: Greg is out of town, so in the meantime you intend to lure the White Lady to your warehouse, whereupon you will access your lift and give the old girl a proper "assessment", is that it?

Too much time on the keyboard today- Greg is in New Orleans until Sunday, so next Monday or Tuesday, the White Lady (the car that is) will be driven up and I'll have a good look. Did you see the ebay auction?

All things being correct I think it's a nice car for that- Would you guess 5-ish K for the 5 speed conversion and it's a 30K car? Probably allot of similar scenarios out there. Of course even better if someone wants an automatic.

Maybe our little group is establishing some kind of pricing/valuation standard- or maybe we should? :)

This '75 CSA that just sold for $25,101, sold on Ebay by the same seller on 5-4-2014 for $28,850. Will be interesting to see if this sale is actually completed.

Any idea why the first sale was not completed? Was something found upon inspection perhaps?

Let me correct what I said about the prior Ebay auction of the '75 CSA - it didn't meet reserve rather than a sale that wasn't completed. My apologies. It does appear that the high bidder this time was the 2nd highest bidder previously at $28,750, so they saved a reasonable amount after the seller re-listed with no reserve. The buyer has zero feedback.

Good news I think! If the car really is as advertised with little rust and in as good shape as the pictures indicate then I think it was a pretty fair deal. I hope the new owner joins our site, registers the car with us and sends lots of pictures so we can start a meaningful valuation database on these things. I don't think it would really be that hard to do as there is not an excessive amount of variation in equipment. We could also list out "upgrades/downgrades" ie. 5-speed conversion/flames painted on fenders.
I don't mind incorporating this into the "collection project" I'm doing on site posts but I also hope I don't make too many mistakes or incorrect assumptions.

Thoughts welcome :)

Peter -- I think this is an excellent suggestion. Not to be overly critical as I haven't contributed much here, but the pricing information in the FAQs dates to 2007. If you were to strive to retain the framework there, but update the prices with 2014 data, it would be very helpful to us rookies.

Cheers

These ebay auction cars often show up again and again....the sellers are bidding them up.

A price database might be a good idea, but I wouldn't use ebay data. High bidder with zero feedback, how about that!

Agreed

I'm hoping to thoroughly examine the white BMW that was reduced to 25K. I think that may be a good start for some more up-to-date pricing. I have also noticed that even among enthusiasts there is a pretty big gap in the worth of these cars. I will probably collect as much data as possible and ask SfDon to help valuate backwards since he is behind the build/sale of some pretty fine coupes. Since I am not an expert by any means I would probably post the data and see if we could come to some conclusions on the forum. Also, one of the reasons this is not that easy a task is that besides looking good, these cars have to run good for them to be worth anything. An original AC Cobra may be worth millions but no one is going drive one to cars & coffee and then bounce it around the backroads after a couple bloody Mary's- (which probably has old Mr. Shelby rolling over in his grave)- so I think a good valuation formula is going to be possible-but a little complex.
