1972 BMW 3.0CS with more pic and info

Hello people on the forum.
My name is Seth Franklin I am 18 years old and have owned five BMW 2002's and I currently own two 1971 2002's. I have a huge passion for the 2002 and now I might be able to snag a 72 CS! I know a lot about 2002's but not so much about the E9. I am looking for some buying advice.



I have an opportunity to buy a 72 3.0CS for $13,500 but I am looking to see if it is worth it. comes with



"alpina style wheels, factory carbs, miscellaneous small parts, e21 recaros with conversation mounts, 5 speed manual and rear diff from 535i."
The parts above are extra parts with the car.

It has a NARDI steering wheel.


has rust in "lower part of front fender and passenger rocker panel, primarily, floor pans solid as is inner fenders." "leaks oil, seeps."

He is selling the car because he is in the middle of a divorce I actually bought 2 2002's off him.

I will be getting more pictures when he gets home in 1 week.



I need a little knowledge about the cs!!!

I'm with Alan. Go for it! Yes rust, probably lots. You obviously have experience with '70's BMW rust. And you have a passion for these cars. And I wonder how many Coupes can you really find, that are actually for sale and that you can really buy outright, in Alaska? Probably not many. Go, talk, inspect, muse, offer, and begin your most amazing E9 journey with all the time you have before you. We are here to help. Mike
 
yea then you can get all our outrageous and silly and fun and on and on comments from all us "wise" hah

This is the situation I've been presented with over the years several times. I had been wanting a small window VW beetle but there were none for sale in mid Missouri in the 70's. I found one in the woods that was rusty, and missing an engine, but it was cheap and I had a source of parts so I bought it. I found my coupe on Maui. It was the second one I had ever seen and only one I had ever seen for sale. I bought it for 20 times the price of my '54 beetle, but it was many times cheaper than anything discussed here for sale in the last 5 years.

Buy the best you can, but when those numbers are just above zero, sometimes you gotta take what you can get. It's easier these days to find things with the interwebs, but I still got a deal on Maui because I was thousands of mile away from the mainland and there's a limited pool of knowledgeable enthusiasts with time, space and money to take on a coupe project. I was lucky.
Alaska would present some of the same challenges and opportunities.

As an owner of a '72 CS and a '72 2002tii, I can say it's incredible to own both. The E9 is a much more complex car however with certainly many more challenges with rust than the '02. My sense is that although Coupes are beautiful and in demand when in restored or "solid driver" condition, ones with serious rust/structural issues don't have much value. In particular one in "non-stock" condition is worth much less. I'd seriously haggle down. As a former Alaskan resident, I can't imagine there's much of a market for a rusty, non-stock, carbureted E9 in the month of January. Make a low ball offer. If you get it great, it's a long term project. If not, save your nuggets and get one in better shape down the road. Just my .02 :)

I want it but need to be smart about things.
 
I think he's saying you should offer $11k for the red one.

Oh and major props to you for being only 18 and this deep into vintage bmw's. Hope it works out for you. If you can get us pics of the interior and the usual rust areas a $ amount to offer would be easier to provide.
 
I assume it's running and driving? Then $11,000 isn't too far off the mark. If you can't drive it home, I'd offer $7,500

I lived on W 39th in beautiful downtown Spenard for 5 years. Lovely area!
 
If it's only the front fender and rocker that is affected, and the interior and the mechanicals work great, than I think $11k tops is fair.

But if you see serious rust issues on the rear fenders, trunk, floors, engine compartment, then maybe $6k.

Sure, it's convenient and saves you money on shipping a car as this one is local in AK, but unless you're willing to do body work on your own, or have it farmed out which will be in the thousands, maybe better to just buy a much more solid one for a bit more money and have it shipped.

The front fenders/rockers are a bit scary. Hopefully that's the extent of it.

haha yeah I'm a very much into old bmw's haha. they are so cool. and fore sure I will definitely get you pictures in a week or so once he gets back and I can go look at the car. thanks!

Nice! that is a pretty part of town! it is running and driving. I can drive it home it will be a sketchy drive the weather has been all over the place as you probably remember. thanks!
