Chris,

I recognize your screen name from S14.net, welcome to the E9 world (I very much miss having an E30 M3, but they cost double or triple what I sold mine for!).

DEFINITELY bring a magnet to check out the car. Don't let your emotions get the best of you with these cars: if you say to yourself, "I can live with that surface rust or paint bubbling," you will be sorry.

Think of an E30 windshield cowl: if the paint is bubbled, you know what that means. Unfortunately, with the E9, the whole car is pretty much a trouble zone!

Where is the car BTW? Some of us may already know it. Let us know what you find! Max

This will tell you more info on the car. Also look the vin up to see if it has been registered before.

I wouldn't dwell on whether or not it's euro spec. The cars are pre-emissions and look nearly identical. My car is a euro, but it has a is cluster, signals, reflectors, dash controls, etc.

Check the second vin plate. it is on the passenger side, just underneath the back hood seal on the firewall/cowl, facing the windshield.

Hi Chris,

I have 2 methods- more of a state of mind- pretend you are inspecting the car for a friend (who you like). You'll find things you never thought of. Also, along with looking at the rust diagrams, check out the restorations section and look at the pictures- that will tell you what others have found when they dig into these cars. Don't forget the rear shock tower tops though they can be hard to see if the plastic is still on there. Anywhere where metal joins is suspect. My other method, if I am really interested in a car is to wash and dry it. As you do that you will see allot of stuff. You may not have luck doing that on an e9, but you can get a soft cloth and wipe it down. It's your money after all. You can find some low rust e9's but remember how expensive it is to re-weld pieces and how expensive the parts can be. Good luck!!

thanks guys for all the feedback and I will be searching for my e9

Just unbelievable. Keep your eyes on he FS section here. I scan for e9 parts daily and post any cars that I find during my search. I usually only post private party sales unless I see something worth a conversation.

Chris, where are you located? I have an e9 that is in the process of being put back together and it's up on a lift in my warehouse so you could have a look at every single nook & cranny at your leisure. I would be happy to let you loose and explore:-)

I'm in Austin TX

See Sven's restoration pictures. The disassembly photos are a great tutorial for where they rust.
