I'm parting ways with the 1973 3.0cs coupe that I have owned for the 22+ years. It came to me as a car from Texas, but from the amount of rust, I would say it spent considerable time here in the Northeast.
Both fenders and the supporting structure was replaced as well as the rocker panels on both sides. All existing rust was cut out and patch panels welded in where appropriate. This work was also performed on the floor. Any existing rust was treated with acid rust killer and painted with rust prevention coatings. This work was performed by myself over 20 years ago, and has not returned, proving the effectiveness of the procedure.
The car was repainted from its original color of Verona to metallic Granarot. The re-paint was performed close to 20 years ago, and has held up reasonably well but could use a professional re-spray.

The car is in good mechanical condition. The engine was upgraded to a 3.5 liter engine from a BMW 535 (provenance unknown) All front end suspension components have been replaced along with 4 new Bilstein shocks, 4 new Continental Extreme Contact tires, BBS RS 3 piece rims, new Stainless Steel exhaust system, and period correct CoCo floor mats.

Windshield wiper motor, heater blower motor, both front window motors, ignition switch, driveshaft, and fan clutch are among the items that have been replaced in recent years.

The odometer reads a little more that 61,000 miles, and the car has been driven less than 5,000 miles in the past 20 years.

The majority of the work performed on the car has been done by myself, with the assistance of a full-time mechanic friend, so a documented history of the work performed is unavailable. It was never my intention to sell this car, so record-keeping was not a priority.

I understand the lack of documented history negatively affects the selling price of the car, bit it is a low mileage, rust-free example with many new parts.

I am asking for $35,000 but will entertain any reasonable offer.

Hi Scott.
I honestly know very little about the history of the coupe. I purchased it over 20 years ago, long before Carfax or Kelly Blue Book were a thing.
I purchased it from a friend who was selling it for his brother in law, who passed away shortly after my purchase.

Like I said, it was reportedly from Texas, but I have nothing to verify that and the rusty condition of the coupe when I got it implies that it spent most of it's life up here in the salty North East.

Hello, I saw in another thread that you put this on Facebook and lowered the asking price?

I’m new to the site and in the market for an E9. As I was saying in my intro thread, figuring out the wiring and dealing with those rusted bolts underneath might be the kind of project I’m up for, as long as there is no sign of body rust.

@Laldog, I know you said you don’t have much documentation from your restoration 20 years ago. Do you at least have a copy of a receipt from the paint work? Had it had any other paint work done in the last 10 years? Do you see any bubbles in the paint anywhere?

Also, can you provide some more pictures? For starters I’d like to see what the rockers look like with the covers removed, and shots of the firewall behind the glovebox and fusebox with as much insulation pulled back as possible. Also some video inside the pockets in the front fenders as explained in this video:

Basically I’m trying to check off as many of these shots as possible.

The fenders and front strut towers are tricky because that insulation you put on looks like a nice copy of the original, but could be hiding a lot underneath. How is it attached?

Sorry for all the requests, but Boston is a long way from Arizona and if I’m contemplating bringing my trailer out, I’d like to be as sure as possible.

that is a good piece - Scott Crater (@craterface) knows his way around vintage cars and the coupe.

you have looked at the white car on BaT - there is a pic of the rocker with the cover removed - the cover is black, but in the pic you will see the white rocker with some surface rust.

Yes, it was actually me who requested that pic from the seller on BAT. I’m not experienced, but I also think it looks like surface rust. Maybe a little bubbling paint but pretty good if it hasn’t been touched for 50 years?

If @Laldog’s rockers look like that it would encourage me to make the drive from Arizona to Boston.

And good to know about @craterface - is he local to Boston? Maybe I could hire him to do a PPI on this car.

if you want somebody really good to do a PPI in the NE - Mario at VSR in NH. he know his way around all vintage BMW - both street cars + race cars. the downside is that's a 2+ hour drive from Boston
