1973 E9 Front Bumper Advise sought

I am not sure but I have the 73 version on the with the LH &RH side pieces loose it looks like if I could slide rearward a couple inches they should fit fine.

Chris,

If one uses the shorter 72 brackets on a 73 bumper, won't the left and right side pieces of the bumper sit incorrectly against the left and right fenders of the car? The ends will be closer to the wheel openings by 1-2 inches, no?
Pickmans holes are already closer to the wheel opening so he will be able to use those.

Yes, that's fully possible Scott, would have to check that first.

You can cut & shorten the “triangle” sides, bend the shortened sides in and re-weld to the main arm. But I would cut the sides off, shorten and weld back to the center arm at the angle I want them, b/c I don’t have a setup to hold the remaining sides & angles stationary—bending in a vise seems like it could change the attachment angles unpredictably.

If I'd be faced with this, I would fabricate two pieces of steel that look like the pre-73 brackets in the picture. With some basic measurements from forum members who have the part at hand, it's not more then 30 minutes to make a pair, provided you have some steel lying around, a vice & a big hammer and a block of wood (don't hit the metal directly; it'll mark; - use wood to spread the load).

The mounting side to the car, shown as 2 M8 holes, I would make as slotted holes, so you can accurately place the bumper aligning it with the fender holes, allowing stress free installation.

The pre-73 bracket look like they have a lateral offset. to ensure that you make something that works, just overdo the bends to make sure it bends out far enough. It's hidden inside the bumper anyway. Make large slot holes where it attaches to the bumper.

If you don't like what you have made, just start over and do it again. The second set takes half the time with these things.... (AMHIK)

Just to check;
1. are fenders actually different over the years regarding the location of the mounting hole? Would European versions, not having the 2,5 mph bumpers, have continued using the simple L-brackets post '73?
