Mystery of Hartge tags and strong motor resolved. Found receipt in the rather thick files and for purschase and installation of tuned 3.5 Hartge motor, installed in '97. So Don was right, it is high compression, high hp example but Hartge tuned motor rather than the factory motor. Might still be based on the M90 but further tuned by Hartge.
Price lowered further to $33,500
This car is a well sorted driver with some very special mods.
I bought this car as a rust free specimen but alas, seller was not quite honest about that.
Had the car sent directly to Don Lawrence (SFDon on the board), who most of you know. He went through the car mechanically to get it running right and also ferreted out the lurking rust and removed and repaired it, lastly adding a new undercoating to protect it. Itemized list is attached.
The car had an early 80's factory engine replacement to the highly desirable M90. This is a 3.5l high compression, high hp example that puts out around 220hp. Mated with 5spd transmission and Carl Nelson springs and upgraded torsion bars, creates a very spirited driver that handles well and is quite fast. Don recommended replacing springs but I like the stance and handling and find very few times that the car is too low. Easy fix if desired by new owner.
Windows work, old trumpet horns work, car starts right up runs smoothly.
As a nice driver that looks good, handles well and is super fun to drive, this is spot on. If you want a show car, this would fit the bill MODESTLY with some time and money spent of cosmetics. But further aspirations would require deep pockets imo. Some gaskets are good some need replacing, wood is a bit dry but in pretty good shape over all. Nardi steering wheel has some scratches and dings but could be refinished. Seat leather is new, very supple and well done. Carpets are ok but drivers side could use replacement.
I am enclosing a good set of pics. I just had a big rock ding repaired the the front quarter repainted. Although the color is not factory, its quite nice imo, and we were able to match it very nicely. Also had all the old window tint removed and it made a world of difference in the feel inside the car.
I have lots of receipts, going back to the mid 90's. Car lived most of its life in Texas and California. Title in hand. There is a local independent shop where I have serviced BMW's for years, with a tech who knows coupes well if anyone wants a ppi, but Don knows the car very well and has kindly volunteered to give feedback to serious buyers. $33,500.
