Just bought one too. Off the road since 96. Rust repair, new interior (original vinyl) and new mechanicals to come.

Even if it is a 2.5 liter and an automatic this car looks very promising. If it is truly a 36k mile car with great original paint and low rust the price is unbelievable. Add a 5 speed and bigger engine and you've got a great car for a very reasonable price (60k?) or just keep it the way it is. Again - needs more pictures I think and a PPL.

After market sunroof, is that the toolkit a 75 came with?

@rblongboarder : The 2.5 CS was a reaction to the oil crisis in 1973/74. Most manufacturers offered smaller engines for some models, usually a little less equipped, too.

The 2.5 CS came with steel wheels and caps and missing rear overriders. The small toolbox and the absence of the panel under the bootlid should be correct for the 2.5 CS only. To my mind, the rear windows are fixed, not completely sure about that. The Germans bought relatively few cars in 1974 and also few E9. Everybody bought few 2.5 CS, there were 600 4-speed and 244 automatic cars.

I doubt what we see on the outside is the original paint. The doorpanels look very custom and hardly nice, the hole in the roof is as 80s as it is ugly. What I really don't like is both typeplates, BMW and MOTAG, are fixed with screws, not rivets. If the MOTAG plate is original to the car, then the three "caring Dutch owners" followed at least one Swiss owner, not mentioned here.

That is correct. 2.5cs had fixed rear glass other than one ordered electric windows. In this car it’s fixed as can be seen by the 4 blank window switches on the gear leaver box. Power steering was also a payable extra on 2.5CS, most were with manual steering but different ratio to the Csl boxes.

@bmw2800cs its (atleast) 136,000 miles and not 36,000

I guess these 2.5's just needed less on the road fixin' than did their 2800 and 3.0 big brothers!

That dinky little toolbox just looks funny. And the screwdriver handle isn't even red!

Kidding aside, it does look like a decent example. Too bad someone took a can opener to its roof back in the day.
