2002 Turbo

Certainly, happy to explain!

The Turbo steering wheels can be distinguished by their horn buttons visually. The 2002 Turbo steering wheel has a horn button with only the emblem as the push button, while the E21 steering wheels the entire center is the push button and quite bit thicker than the 2002 thin cover. The 2002 Turbo steering wheels have the part number 1113738 stamped at the inside of the hub to confirm as well. Also, the 2002 hub cover has two sections while the e21 has 3. So some subtle differences as well as different part numbers to confirm.

Hope that helps! Clear as mud! :D

@JohnP_02 looks like both photos are Turbo wheels.

At the risk of tuning this into a 2002faq thread.

While the wheels are similar. When you see them side by side the difference is obvious.
The Turbo @HB Chris represented on BaT has the correct wheel.
This is actually an e21 (320is) wheel:

Sorry, but you are incorrect. Those are both e21 turbo wheels, the 2002 turbo wheel has a different horn button, different hub cover and different part number. I know it’s hard to see, but I am correct on this. Sorry

could have possibly been switched during a refurb by someone who thought they looked close enough / the same (didn't pay close enough attention)

Well since there was never a production E21 turbo it is simply an E21 sport wheel. The metal spoked version was for the early 77-78 models and the covered spoke version with genuine leather grip was introduced in 79 till the end of the model run in 83. The two key differences are as mentioned: the horn button and the hub cover between the early E21 sport wheel and the 2002 Turbo wheel. Another key point is that you cannot mount the 2002 Turbo horn button onto the early E21 sport wheel.

I have three of turbo wheels. Hub is like a Petri wheel and the rim screws on to the hub along with cover which by the way has one step. Horn button is as described with just the emblem pushing. Last picture is when I sanded the spokes due to pitting paint and thought it looks good unfinished, before installing on my 2002 touring. I also painted the instrument cluster, turbo like.
