Hi Folks,

I decided to sell my European 2800 CS sport wheel. I don't really want to sell it, but I'm recognizing that my steering wheel fetish means that I likely won't use the wheel, and it will hide in storage.

I recently cleaned it up and it looks pretty good in my opinion. The wheel is old, and used, and shows signs of wear. The leather is in good shape however, with no significant tears or abrasions. You can twist the leather in a few sections if you feel so inclined, but it doesn't seem to make a difference while driving.

I did recently clean up the wheel. I wet sanded the spokes and sprayed them with satin paint. I then wet sanded the paint. There is still patina on the spokes. I wet sanded the leather with 220, 600, and 1500 grit paper, then redyed. I cleaned up the chrome bits as much as possible, and cleaned the grease off the horn ring. I also cleaned and dyed the horn pad. The dye doesn't actually soak into the horn pad, but it does darken the tiny particles trapped in the orange peel surface of the foam pad - making it look cleaner.

I'm going to stay firm on the $300 price for this wheel, which I consider fair and reasonable. I checked Ebay.de and much rougher looking wheels have a starting point of $300 euros.

I'm sure it won't top 38CM Petri values but the buyer certainly won't ever lose money on the wheel.

Thanks for listening!

Great looking wheel! GLWS.

I share your steering wheel fetish! I have a Nardi hanging in my office and three others hanging in the garage. We're in the process of moving and the new house has a larger garage, I'm planning on having a wall of steering wheels.

Hi Folks,

The wheel is on hold pending evaluation of an offer. I've been advised by a few people to hang onto it due to rarity.

Also, I wasn't sure if it's been recovered but I think it has long ago. The reveal on the chrome spoke caps is somewhat muted by the leather.

Good move. I think you would regret selling. Three or more years ago I sold a wood 2800 wheel in very good condition. Regretted it and spent the last couple years restoring the one I put into my coupe last week

I really appreciate the sound advice Stan!

Off the market folks. I'm not trying to be irritating but I think I should hang onto it.

It would be hard to find out there if you were looking for one. I'd keep it and add it to the collection. I missed a stock wood one a couple of months ago by seconds .

Looks to me like there is an aftermarket leather wheel cover stitched over the wheel. Ive not recovered that particular wheel before but ive not seen that style of stitch work by BMW on any wheel ive come across. Another clue is where you see the spoke and leather warp are not stitched, there are pre punched holes in the front and back and that is something factory wraps dont have. It does look vintage.

I agree Chris. Thanks for joining btw. The chrome tabs should have about .75" of reveal. The recover is old, and thick. I will probably send the wheel to you to recover.

BTW - I'm the same BMW guy that has been talking to you about recovering my vintage alpina (Momo Prototipo) wheel.

I think that is a 'do it your self' cover, I put the probably the same one on my 2002 back about then
Ask the former owner

Yeah, I figured what a better place to get exposed to the world of BMW steering wheels than a special interest forum. With all the variation of wheels BMW used over the years Im sure some of these older models are hard to get hands on.

And sorry for posting in your ad thread. It didnt really click where I had posted until it was already done.
