2800 vs. 3.0 Hagerty valuation / what am I missing?

OK...I am trying to make sense of the apparent gap in value between a 2800 / 3.0 CS. Not sure I see it in the market place but renewing my insurance policy with Mr. Hagerty and he apparently thinks otherwise.

Chassis, suspension, body and interior finishes are essentially identical depending on how appointed so don't see much variation there.

Drive train? Now I certainly carry a bias in this discussion…but if you use the Road and Track attachments in the tech area for reference, the performance of the 1970 / 1973 coupes are again virtually identical. If anything in terms of forward movement the 2800CS has the slight edge in performance. Higher compression engine; higher hp 192 vs 170; (less torque 174 vs. 185), slightly more free revving, no smog pump; lighter (100lbs…probably a new R&T scale?); quicker (at least to 60mph).

So much for forward motion…then there are the brakes. Definitely a step up in the 3.0… the right answer to the problem are stopping distances are notably shorter and fade will be reduced.

So if all else is essentially the same is it down to the brakes that brings a $15K+ delta in value???

What am I missing???

As I am biased as well, I would argue that Mr. Haggerty is uninformed. The 2800 actually is more rare in terms of production numbers. An upgrade to rear discs is straightforward (and not particularly noticeable in my experience). Brass vs aluminum rear panel and lighter curb weight are also objective advantages. All said, they are so similar that a delta of that magnitude is completely unsupportable.

My $0.02 and happy Thanksgiving to all!

John,

as a fellow 2800cs owner, i share your concern. you are correct, the differences are minor - i'm going to do the brake swap this winter, which takes out the 1 negative.

i spoke to a hagerty guy at the kiawah show - biggest problem is published sale reports. my coupe is insured w/ hagerty for more than their highest 2800cs value. remember, these values are averages.

i would get a quote from competitors at a higher value and use that to leverage hagerty.

Scott...funny, they never questioned my agreed value which I set at $40K. But I have multiple cars with them and was looking at upping coverage and got a bit of a shock how far over their valuation the coupe was. Chose not to push the envelope...

And...I'm right behind you on the brake swap! Figure that's gotta be worth $15K right there!!

I have been fighting this one with Hagerty's for several years now. This is very frustrating! I upgraded rear discs, 3.5 EFI, 5 speed and a couple of suspension compotents only to have them classify the car as "HIGHLY" modified. Therefore they gave me an annual fee that was 2 - 3x over the standard number. Be forwarned that you walk a fine line if you start disclosing all changes made to the vehicle. I'm living proof of this now.

Gary,

Forewarned. Right now not an issue for me, but get the gist. Modifications are to be subtlety disclosed. My general philosophy is if it was a common mod. and factory ackowledged in the day it ain't non-stock. Go Alpina!

I also had the same issues with Hagerty, finally got an additional 5k out of them to push to 30
Do not understand and their people could not tell me why
