The rear brakes on my coupe are quite leaky. The rear wheel cylinders appear to be somewhat hard to find/expensive.

Are the wheel cylinders shared with any other models? Has anyone else replaced these that can recommend a source?

Also found on VW vans of similar vintage--seem to recall about 18mm piston size--perhaps still available and at lower price--if available would replace both R & L.

Story--while touring through Wyoming in 1975 was stuck in the mountains with a very leaky L rear brake cylinder seal on my 1970 2800 CS--no BMW Dealer around Wyoming--so contacted my then German MM in California by phone for guidance--he suggested the VW solution--as the closest BMW parts source was in Denver, CO--many miles of mountain driving away from my location--VW Dealer parts came through with identical parts in a rebuild kit, from ATE.
 
I took notice of your post here (via my recent purchase of a 2800CS.... )

The only place I see rear cylinders is Maximillian (BMW Mobile Tradition)
They are ~$105 each - but they do show available.

FYI - They appear to be 22.20mm in diameter (I think the regular 2002's are ~16mm and the tii is ~18mm if memory is correct)

More troubling to me are the rear drums.... P/N 34211102126

I bit the bullet and ordered them new from BMW. $106 per side.

VW Type 2 and Type 3 rear wheel cylinders are 22mm, as are the later front wheel cylinders on the Type 1 so a VW rebuild kit might have done the trick. In the end I went for the bolt on solution.

The brake shoes are a lot cheaper, about $25 for the set. I should have ordered those as well, given how much brake fluid leaked onto the shoes.

A long time mechanic suggested soaking the shoes in water (!) for a few days as a way to get the brake fluid out of the shoes. He drives an E9 too, so what the hell, I'll try it.
 
Did anyone ever try replacing directly with VW Type 2 and Type 3 rear wheel cylinders?
 
Got mine new from Ben at La Jolla. Brake shoes as well.

As to shoes, not much of a fan of taking shortcuts when it comes to stopping.

Shoes were relatively cheap. Peace of mind...worth every penny.
