I have been working on my friends coupe the last couple weeks.
Right now, we had a hard time of getting it into reverse, but we did. It seems like the whole shift platform moved excessively when pushing into reverse. Should I be looking for a bushing that connects the shifter platform to the body somewhere?
 
There are 4 bushings that connect the shift tower platform to the transmission. These could be loose or worn out. Also you can check the shift rod bushings at the stick to linkage connection but my bet is on the platform.

Thanks. I believe it is a getrag transmission as I did find a bmw prop logo, and 262 000 200 00 1R.
Can i find these 4 bushings on www.Realoem.com?

It is a 4spd Getrag then. Here is the real oem pic of the shifter, but can you direct me to the 4 bushings that I would need?

The 262 means Getrag 4 speed, 5 speed is 265.

4 of #17 in the pic which is part number 25111202842

Other bushings that will tighten up slop are are the shifter to lingage ones:

2 of part number 23411466120

and 2 of the shifter sockets part number 23411466110

Yeah those bushings have a rubber center and are famous for rotting out from heat and oil exposure, causing shift sloppiness. They can be changed with the trans in and you or your pal under the car, but you gotta be paitent and it helps to have small hands, or a small trans (done it on several of my 4speed 2002s).
