I'm in the process of trying to increase my insurance replacement value. Not really sure where I should be but its higher than $40K which is where I am at now.

According to Hegarty, 2800CS values are not going up like 3.0 values. They have them peaking at $28K. I'd be curious to know what 2800CS owners are insured for (if you will share) and what recent sales info you have to back up your value.

Tod,

i had my 2800cs insured with Hagarty for 30k. after Hagarty increased my premium by $75 / year for no particular reason, i got a quote from Heac0ck Classic for $40k - same coverages as Hagarty. when it went to underwriting, they said they couldn't do 40k ... i referred them to the article that Hagarty had stated that coupe values had gone up 25% in 3 years (or whatever that number was) ... and they approved it for 40k. i cited a few 2800cs that i know sold a few years ago for substantially more than 30k - the white Cormier car (i think that's correct from California), Murray's car ... and a few others that sold for a reasonable amount ... reminding them that these cars don't often go to auction, and are primarily sold by private sale. i also reminded them that they are the exact same car, just a different engine size (okay, i didn't tell them about rear drums vs. rear discs).

It's interesting that the 2800's are significantly lower. As mentioned, the exact same car. Even the 'different engine' argument is subjective, given that they are both M30's. I suppose it's simply supply and demand. In this case I would say demand, not supply. BMW made twice as many 3.0's (including the CSL, etc.). There over twice as many 'left' according to the registry, which makes perfect sense (newer, includes special models, etc.)

I ran into the exact same pissing match with Hagerty's a few years ago. I cancelled my policy and went with the same outfit Scott did out of FL. Heacook inc. I'm north of 60K now

I started with Hagerty with an agreed value of $12K, over the course of time, that increased with restoration and engine work to the current $70K

I googled and got some auction results and posted selling prices from Coupe King and La Jolla independent. Also emailed a dozen photos

I'm having the same problem with State Farm. I purchased my 70 E9 in Jan 2014 for $34,500. Car is fully mod 3.5 motor, 5 sp, rear discs, upgraded suspension and cooling system plus Coupe King exhaust. Interior and exterior excellent.
I wanted to insure for 40k. SF issued policy for $28k. They are telling me I need to supply auction results to justify $40k coverage. As you know auction results are not there. So at this point stuck with the $28k coverage.

I believe "modified" cars come under some additional scrutiny as well from "classic car" insurers when it comes to agreed value... that was a check box and discussion point with the Hagerty underwriter.

get your coupe away from state farm. they won't give you 28k if something happens without a huge fight ... they will go looking at what they think is comparable ... i.e., rust bucket for $12k. and you will have to fight to get what its worth. face it there aren't many auctions that include 2800cs or even 3.0cs. mostly private sales.

i didn't check the box with Hagerty, even though mine has a 3.5 and a 5 speed, as well as an air dam. it looks stock ... and its insured for 40k. call Heac0ck ... and speak to Angela, she went thru the education on my car a few months ago ...

+1 I still have State Farm for my family cars but dropped them in favor of Hagerty for the coupe for this reason.

After a couple of emails with my explanations/education and some current pics, Hagerty raised my replacement value to $60K.

Just so all are aware, the 2800 is clearly more valuable than the more common 3.0- and it had chrome plated brass rear trim between the tail lights instead of the more pedestrian aluminum! Some even had the early red tail lights. No buggy bumpers ever appeared on a 2800. And the 2800 badge is unobtanium!

Now to get the insurance upped on mine!

Names are shortened as value increases.

330Ci to M3
Edsonarantesdonascimento to Pelé
GeorgeWBush to W

bad example.
