Regarding what seems to be a Love/Hate on the stripes (I rarely hear, "I'm impartial to the stripes"). Personally, I have always liked them on almost every coupe I've seen them on. When I bought my coupe, it came with stripes but with the Blue/Red combo on my nachtblau paint. It seems it comes down to the purists NOT liking them, maybe hate is too strong of a word, maybe not. Unless they on a CSL "Batmobile". Which makes sense.
However, the two non-original pieces on the exterior of my coupe that stand out the most are the stripes and the splitters. Both not original of course to a '74 US 3.0CS. What I found was I get nothing but compliments on the stripes, to me it accentuates the classic lines at the same time adding a little sportiness to it with a very simple, removable, add-on. I decided to keep them and glad I did.
The splitters are off topic on this thread however same comments apply. Generally all good (admittingly people that have no clue about what the car even is or seeing one for the first time in the wild here in Northern Idaho). They are definitely a conversation starter and people are just curious what the heck they are doing on a car (what do they do, etc.). I generally just say, "it was early design studies regarding aerodynamics for BMW which they used on their race cars at the time to create some downforce at high speeds". I subsequently kept them on the car as well and they are a fun conversation piece with not much (in my opinion) effect on aerodynamics the way I drive the car it is pretty much irrelevant, so 99% looks. Not sure they really did much on the real race cars either, but that's above my pay grade.
And who really cares what "others" think anyways as long as YOU like them. That's all that matters. These "racing stripes" I like to call them look very nice to me and seem to be much better quality than some of the other aftermarket ones available, plus a club member selling them so big bonus there. Keep up the good work, whoever buys these I don't think you will regret it. If you do, take them off without too big of a cost outlay if you decide to scrap them. I also didn't want to take either off in case I messed up paint but I know there are tricks to minimize all that and not affect the paint at all other than fading over time maybe under the stripes and splitters vs. the rest of the paint depending on how long they have been on the car.
