I found two part-cars, both 3.0 CSi , with VIN 2260420 and VIN 2260243

(3,0 CSi were build from # 2260001 to # 2266506)

One of those is a 3.0 CSi Automatic !

Now my question: Converted or original delivered ?

On the german Coupe-Club-Homepage I read, that 2 automatic test cars were build in Feb 72, but I found no VIN.........does anyone now the numbers?
 
I sent email to Mr Hars for information and to register these cars.
Are they gone forever or likely to be restored and driven again?

No reported VI numbers for the 2 cars in question.

Having once seen an automatic equipped 02 tii, it would not surprise me to see a Csi auto. There are a few folks on this board (for example Pamp) who converted their CS's to CSi's. The number of stock Csa's, and right hand drive CSia's, coupled with the fact that E3 automatics were plentiful, favor the likelihood that your find is a conversion. But this conclusion is an uneducated guess.

The LHD CSi was built between:

07/71-10/73 (VIN range 2260001 to 2266506) 6506 cars including 2 automatic
10/73-11/75 (VIN range 4340001 to 4341429) 1429 cars

The RHD CSi was built between:

12/73-12/75 (VIN range 4350001 to 4350207) 207 cars
01/73-12/75 (VIN range 4330001 to 4330215) 215 automatic cars

All in all, BMW have built 215 (RHD) + 2 (LHD) automatic CSi. The two original LHD CSiAs are extremly rare and I have never seen the VIN of these two cars but they should be in that range (2260001 to 2266506).

I think the best way to find out if your CSiA is one of the real ones, is to also find out the engine number and send an email to BMW archive for verification of the VIN + engine number in question. BMW will then confirm if these VIN/engine numbers were originally built as a CSiA.

If the automatic CSi is one of the 2 original build LHD cars, it will be driven, sure !
Everything else would be insanity !

We (our Club) bought 5 cars yesterday.......in bad shape, mostly disassembled, but all cars are complete:

1x 3,0CSi
1x 3,0CSiA
1x 3,0CS
2x 2800CS

We get a great deal of snow yet, so the transport of all 5 with a truck will be foremost possible in a few months.
 
We have the 3,0 CSi Automatic in our garage ! Its one of the two ever build !
We had a call with BMW and they said, yes, you have the original car in hands !
It is a german delivered car with Borg-Warner-Automatic gearbox.
It has the wrong seats in it, is very rusty, but apart from that complete!
Too good and too rare to throw away or make it a parts-car....a tough call !​

Can someone do me the favour and put it into the registy ?

The car has 5 alloy-rims Mahle-BBS in 7jx14, one in the trunk​
 
Congrats to a really rare CSi(A).

I thought that the two CSis with automatic transmission ended as prototypes. Did BMW MT really confirm that they were delivered to customers in the open market?

Yes, they did confirm, after WE said them the VIN-number ! So the other is still missing, and the number is a well kept secret !

After I have read the article : https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/pres...=9&id=T0079256EN_US&left_menu_item=node__2387 it will be the best idea, to get in contact with MOBILE TRADITION again !

wow...those were an old discussion topic like 25 years ago!
Since there were only two,
that car has GOT to be MUCH MORE VALUABLE than ANY "CSL."

Those BW trannies were absolute PIGS though,
the power drain from the torque converter was something like 30% when new!
 
The original color was Inka Orange, that means you HAVE to fix it. Can't let anything orange die. What does it mean the club bought them? Who owns the car? Who decides if it is worth restoring and put up the resources? Do you also do group buys of underwear?
So many questions...

Not me ! My colleague, he initiates the deal....thats firm but fair ! My car is the 2,5cs, I posted some pics in another thread.

Just for info.

In the German version of the E9 owner's manual from II/72, a lot of technical data for the Automatic version of the 3.0 CSi(A) is included. Maybe the info was aimed for the RHD 3.0CSi cars with Automatic transmission (215 cars built). But it's a little bit strange that is was mentioned in the German owners's manual when only two LHD 3.0 CSi(A) prototypes were built.

Hi, I’ve just joined this site and I have found a genuine RHD 3.0 CSiA - one of the 215 built.

Would it be a more valuable car than a 3.0 manual? It’s not too bad condition and pretty original
