I'm in escrow on a beach home that I own/will have owned in San Clemente CA, and going through things which I have stored there I discovered that I have a 3.07 LSD and a 3.64 open differential. The 3.07 is casting marked E24 and the 3.64 came out of my '71 Dietel Alpina Bavaria. Both will fit right into an E3 or an E9. I need to move them this weekend to my home in Pasadena CA, and am curious about the value of the LSD if I decide to let it go. I have not opened it up, so don't know the condition of the innards, but I do know that it sat on that darned bench since 1998!

As a core- no idea of condition- 600.00
rebuilt - 2500
clutches, bearing and seals with a good gear shop is 900.00

Keep in mind that the LSD unit is NOT interchangeable with an early side loader.

No it’s not.
Unless your time is worth nothing.
And you get free gas.
And a free truck.
And free insurance
And it’s Re-buildable and not just an 80# lump of junk.
And you don’t pay for rent on a shop.
And you don’t pay for insurance.
And electricity.
And gas.
And it’s a perfect world where nothing gets damaged in transit.
And you never get sick or hurt (maybe loading that diff into a truck)
And you don’t need to send your daughter to college.
And it sits in your shop for 3 years without selling....
And you don’t care about your reputation so when it shows up broken you tell the buyer “Too Bad”

And yes the early e24’s were sidthe 900 was just the parts ... I missed that on the first reading.

@sfdon - so the 3.64 that windnsea has will NOT bolt directly into my 73' Bav? I thought they did, especially since it was in a 71' previously. Thanks and sorry if I am not understanding properly because mine is a side loader, standard Bavaria diff. -best of my knowledge. Not interested in the 3.07. I am right next door and could pic it up, if it bolts in not knowing condition just taking a chance it's still good since they were pretty bullet proof right? What would you say is a fair price?

The issue with early vs late side loaders... they both bolt right into a coupe with no problems except the hardware to the flanges is different. Not a big deal.
The problem is with what’s INSIDE.
You cannot install a late LSD unit into a early gear set.
Not compatible.
A good 3.64 core is worth 200 bucks

Don - so the 3.64 is considered early correct? And it should bolt in to a 73' Bavaria? Or do I still have that wrong? Wait nevermind, I was thinking the 3.64 was a LSD too. May bad. I just read it wrong.

Diffs available-
3.07
3.25
3.45
3.64

the 3.07 is late sideloader only with 265/5 tranny not from e9 coupe

Don can chime in if (when) I am wrong. It is my understanding that there are three different sideloader cases. The cases all fit in e3's, e9's, e12's, and e12 based e24's. The internals aren't interchangeable though. A 3.64 likely spans at least 2 of the 3 generations if not all three. The 3.07 came with the dogleg, which has behind a 220hp motor with a 1:1 final drive. So it is very tall. Since it came late, you can't swap the LSD onto an early R&P and turn a 3.07 LSD into a 3.64 or 3.45. Now if you found a late model R&P from say a 528,628, 530,630, or a 533,633 then you could swap the internals.

Without getting the specifics right, I believe there is an 8 bolt case, one with nuts and bolts, an 8 bolt case with no nuts (threaded housing) and a 10 bolt case with a threaded housing. Correct @sfdon or no?

I think that "back when' I got ahold of the 3.07 it was going to be a back up to the 3.45 which is in the car. The trans is a Getrag 265/5. However, this 'forever a project' will be on the road and should be quite capable with the larger engine. Can't wait to start draining that 'North of $4.00/gallon gasoline' out of the tank - er - my wallet.

I call it (dumb as it gets) -early early, early and late.
First 2 are fine to commingle. But only the case is the same on the late version.
There are 3 different flanges.
And the flanges can bolt on or they can snap in.

So...

If you have a dogleg....the 3.07LSD will bolt right in correct?

Curious..... ;)

Different in/output splines (flanges/pinion) early to late, so they need to 'match' the diff unit itself - especially re SFDon's note on bolt vs snap. Early also has additional bearing on output flanges; easy 'upgrade' for later. Crown wheels have different bolt configurations, 8 hole vs 10 hole, m10 vs m12. I had 8-hole crown wheels at m10 and m12! I've bought maybe 10-11 LSD S/L's, 4-5 open plus quite a few CW&P's only over the years to compile all my needs for 2 race cars. Differences in the case also, as i recall, 3 types.

Not come across CW/case with nuts. Complete internals are interchangeable within cases but need to take heed of SFDon. I've done much of this. The later/common 3.07 LSD units are difficult to find CW&P's for with them being 10 hole. Nevertheless i have found 3.45, 3.64, 3.91 to fit them. The most adaptable LSD unit has been the earlier (40%) with 8 holes, i found a few 8-hole CW&P at various ratios, had them drilled out to m12.

Don't forget the Klingenburg vs Gleeson also

There is also

3,91
4,25?
4,44

Crown wheels @ m10 and m12, 8 and 10 hole
Klingenburg vs Gleeson
Input/output splines
