4 speed Getrag box - UK based - any value?

Hi guys, the attached 4-speed Getrag box came with my 1974 CSi - I’ve no idea of the original application etc, but it once sat in the CSi.

The numbers are stamped as follows: 262.0.200.00R serial number 061962/8.

The previous owner ran it in the CSi before swapping to a 5-speed. He said it worked perfectly, but he swapped it out of preference.

I have no need for it. Is it any use to anyone? I’m based in Staffordshire, and open to offers. Cheers - Rob

Hi Rob - I would think it is valuable. The 5 speeds we all want are not going to last forever, and it is nearly impossible to find anyone to repair them.

I bought a pair of them for, as I recall, £84 about 3 years ago! The speedo drives (including internal drive gear and washer) ARE worth something. Someone might have an idea of the going rate. Plus as spares as Frankie mentioned.
 
We have a stack of them…. We sell them used for about four or 500 bucks with a warranty to replace them if it’s no good.
Going rate for a refinished one it was about 1200 bucks. Only Csl guys get them.

So Rob used Gearbox value is between 340/440 GBP …

75% of all the used 4 speeds we see are worn out.

Unless you have personally removed the round speedo gear off the output shaft- don’t get your hopes up that you are going to move that gear and shim over to a later 265. It is a pita to get out and many people chip the gear when they try and extract it if they ever do.
Think BFH and a big pry screwdriver and steady sharp beating on the output shaft.
 
I kept my old 4 speed and driveshaft around after doing the 5 speed conversion years ago, even lugged it to our current house when we moved 9 years ago. Finally, after tripping over it again, I took it to the scrap yard a couple of years ago. Nobody wanted it and chances are extremely slim that my car will ever go back to completely stock.

I have mine after the recent conversion, both the gearbox and the driveshaft. I have another e3 driveshaft that came with the 5 speed when I got it. I may list it for sale here, but anticipate that unless another project falls in my lap (I have a m30b34 in almost new condition), I may have to do the same.

I think you are being generous with 75%

I had alot of 5 speeds rebuilt, it was extremely rare to find one in good condition.

The e28 m5's, alpina's, e12 m535i's, b7 restorations I'm involved with, all without question have their gearboxes and diffs rebuilt. These things are 40+ years old with miles of abuse and poor servicing - they went through a long period when the cars had minimal value. Notwithstanding, corroded cases, especially diffs, and bolts etc with salty uk winter roads.

Re removal of the gear, I'm sure I made a pulling tool once to assist with this.
