Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a gasket & seal kit for the older 4 speed gearboxes. W & N does not have anything, realoem says just about everything has ended. Seals are not that big a deal, I have the sizes and get them from a seal outfit, it is the gaskets that I need. I guess I may end up using my artistic abilities and get some thing gasket paper, start tracing and cutting them out with an exacto blade.

If anyone knows, I need three sets

I know, why but I kinda like the 4 speed and it is original.

Thanks, Rick

4 speeds

Rick, you are not alone, I love my four speed.

I wish I could help, but if you find others willing to join you I will offer my skills for a cad file which you might be able to use for laser cutting.

Then again, there may a gearbox specialist that should know exactly what to do...

Best of luck with your search,

MF

Hi Don,

Thanks, just bought it. The Ceylon car looks great, the other one up here sold a couple of days ago, went across the water to Europe. Howmany does Tim have now???

Thanks, Rick

Happy you were able to get the gasket/seal kit, you didn't mention what 4-speed you have. I just went through the same issue with my 4-speed. I found that BMW still has the seal & gasket kit for the Getrag 4-speed, but nothing for the ZF tranny which is what is in my 71 2800CS.

Thought about cutting my own gaskets, but a someone recommended using Loctite 574 sealant instead. Was told it the same stuff used by Porsche guys to seal 911 engine block halves. Wish I had known about this sooner, would have saved me some time & many e-mails/phonecalls. Only have about 50 miles since putting the transmission back in, everything is still dry.

4 speed

I have one of each so this kit will do one of them, I have done lots of Porsche engines and the loctite works well in those so it should be great in the trans. The trans wont even get close to the same temps as the trans and it stays somewhat pliable for quite a few years

Thanks, Rick

It looks like my '70 2800CS has the original ZF transmission. I think I have a bearing going bad as I hear a whirring/rumble at idle in neutral with the clutch out. Put the clutch in and the noise stops. So it seems it would be the bearing on the input shaft. Are they still available? How hard to pull one out and replace it?

Yeah, I'd like to keep the car original. As much as a 5 speed is nice for highway cruising, that's not too big a requirement for me.

4 speeds have a bad reputation for bearings.
Usually more expensive to fix than replace with used.
Better to install a known good used one.
I have getrag 4 speeds in stock ready to go but only 1 zf and it hasn't gone in yet to be checked.

4 speed

Should not be that bad, just match it up to bearings from a bearing outfit, same deal as seals. As long as I have a number off the bearing.

I am getting another 4 speed tomorrow and in the next couple of weeks , start tearing it down. Will post on that once I get to it.

Up to my ears with a 2002ti full resto right now

Thanks, Rick
