Here's one I never thought could happen. After a tune up took it out for a test - in first gear something got picked up off the road and lodged in the shift mechanism upon removal of the trans the shift rod in broken. Need some advice on the repair if parts are still available. Don't know how to shift into second gear to remove the rear cover - what a mess!!

Not so sure that anything came up from the road to do this, it is a weak area It may have been damaged before from harsh shifting and you were the one that did the shift to make it finally crack You might be able to remove the small end caps ( frost plugs ) and physically push the shift rods into second to get the rear cover off Make sure the spring inside on the shifter is not broken or cracked Good luck with the teardown

Thanks, Rick

Rick,

What ever caused this sheared a bolt holding the shift mechanism to the transmission, causing the shifter to drop and hit the guibo. I was going 3 MPH when I heard the clunk - shifter went dead. Thanks for the encouragement

In my experience you’ll be able to get the front 1/3 of the case off just by wrenching and you’ll then be able to shift to second by pulling up on one of the forks. I circled the fork / rod in question in one of the photos in this linked thread.

I wonder if Rob @teahead kept the pieces from that blown out transmission?

Also, is the place where your shift platform bolts onto the transmission now damaged?

The transmission on the outside is solid the shifter holder was bent but can be made right. that was minor. New attachment bolts yes. I have taken these apart before need to have the shift rod sliding pin in a neutral position to remove the rear cover hence second gear.
