73 Fjord E9

I thought I would share some pictures of my newest Coupe. It is a 73 sunroof in some faded out Fjord. The car spent most of its life in New Mexico and California. It has a slushbox right not but that will be remedied in time. Leather was redone a few years ago and been in storage for the past 3 years. Any imput would be greatly appriciated. Thanks,

Great to see another US `73! You still have the original bumper guards and rear bumper hoop covers, these are extremely rare now a days. Was it originally Fjord, I see lots pf black paint under the hood. And it has the tool tray and trunk caddy, looks like the first thing you need to do is put on one of your trunk roundels. Did you get any fly fishing in this year?
 
I guess I still have lots to learn about coupes - so even in 1974 BMW was still building carburated cars? I would have thought that emissions standards would have caused a complete switch-over to fuel injection by then. So the CS and CSi were concurrent?

Hplug: Is your car equipped with Weber 34/36's & JAM adapters for the air cleaner? The cleaner appears shifted back toward the firewall which is usually a sign of this conversion.

I like the car, though the modern wheels don't do a lot for me.

Not enough fly fishing this year just once. Staying too busy with work. The car was originally fjord I don't really get the black either. I even got the bmw rag in the tool box score first one I have ever touched. The tray is in fair condition but a little work and I can make it great. The caddy needs some help to. A lot of people are not into modern wheel and they are kind of goofy right now until I get the suspension done but well see I would rather come across some good alpinas. Thanks for all the comments

No coupes were sold in the US with fuel injection.
In 1975, the E3 sedans got the same L Jetronic injection as the new-that-year E12 530i, but the E9s were dropped because of concerns about not being able to meet some proposed roll-over protection legislation.

The CSi's all had D Jectronic injection, which apparently could not be made to pass US emission requirements.

Certifying emissions compliance was very expensive and I believe that really limited the availability of different engine options in the US during the 70s.

Yes this CS does have webers installed luckily the solex's were in the trunk. The air cleaner is moved back good eye. Thanks
 
My late USA '72 is mostly a '73 so the features are the same as yours. I was really surprised to see that your '73 has both the side and bumper mounted rear license plate lights. I thought that mine was the only one built that way.

I had the redundant set up on my coupe with the lights on either side of the plate functional and the bumper mounted lights unconnected. I though maybe the rear bumper had been replaced! I just removed the upper lights and activated the bumper mounted. Looks cleaner.

`73 license lights

The `73 came with chrome plastic caps to cover the bumper holes where license lights used to reside since BMW moved the lights to the tail panel getting ready for the `74 US model. Since the `73 had a one year only bumper with different mounts they could have easily filled in these holes but didn't, hence the caps. When your PO lost the plastic caps they just inserted the license light so as to avoid a hole.

This is really interesting. I was not aware of this. If I understand correctly what you are saying is that almost all CSi"s refered to on this site and Ebay are really 3.0cs's converted to fuel injection or had the engine changed since I doubt that so many "true" CSi's in the US were imported .
 
Most CSIs referred to on this site/ebay where cars later imported from europe. I think, most who have a CS converted to a fuel injection system will identify their car as a CS upgraded to fuel injection. Those who identify themselves as having a CSI with a VIN
226.... usually do have a real CSI. Some people don't care what it is as long as it has
an upgraded engine with a 5 speed in it.

That's not what I would say. While there are surely some US E9s converted to injection (usually L-Jetronic on the ones I have seen) and given CSi badges, there were a "lot" of european legitimate CSi's imported to the US. I think this was mostly in the 80s. US rules for importing non-US spec "Gray Market" cars have changed several times over the years. Some times it has been fairly easy to import something like a CSi.
