What is the original finish on the aluminum big bumper cars? Grained or sanded, anodized, poished, etc.? Best procedure to restore to original?

Thanks in advance.:)

DOT bumpers

It looks to me to be polished and then clear coat...hard to tell. I can pull a bumper from the rafters and take some photos if you think that would help you.

Thanks Pamp. I would think that someone here might shed some light on it.

I know they're not as sexy as the chrome, but when you're down to authenticity and just gotta have it right- what do you do?

I've heard anodized, polished.. but seen a satin recently that had a minor scuff or two. If it is a bright anodize, then a polish and clear would do.

Maybe the the 2002 guys have the same problem.... time to solve the mystery.

1974 bumpers were anodized...

The finish on all 1974 BMW bumpers was an Anodized finish... The Anodizing was NOT quite a full polish/mirror finish but a process often called bright dip... It is very shinny but not like chrome. The side trim (belt moldings) is anodized

Thanks.

After looking at some of the original and restored cars including 2002s, the finish is as you say. When looking at the reflection of the license plate through the bumper it's almost but not quite mirror-like so there's a bit of haze; not much but noticeable compared to the upper trim.

Raybans not required.

Malibu is right. You will need to ask for a bright dip. I had mine just anodized and it looked dull---this of course before I used Pamp's part to convert to euros.
