Someone right here in town that started down the road of a full blown Carl Nelson-esque restoration on a '73, then realized that if you're going to sink that much money into a Coupe you had better start with the best car you can find.
I don't know how many times this gets said - but for every $5,000 you save on the purchase price of an E9 Coupe, you'll most likely spend $10,000 (or much, much more) fixing the very reasons why you got it for that price.
There is no such thing as a free puppy. 9 out of 10 times you'll pay for it one way or another......
