After welcome rains for the past few days in SoCaal we now have a window of brilliant sunshine and Mark Judy, a local 23 year owner of a lovely 3.0 S has admitted that he has never driven another E-9.

So, I have voluntered him the opportuniity to become BLUMAX qualified--and in 15 minutes---yours truly and Mark are going out for a 30-45 minute drive being chauffered by Mark in the BLUMAX.

It will be very interesting to watch his face light up when we get the temp guage in the normal drivng temp.

And--the 30-45 minute outing turned into 2 hours as Mark was grinning from ear to ear as the seamless torque came from his right foot.

Now here is a guy whose daily driver is a 2003 545 M-Sport. The BLUMAX is admitedly not its equal in performance--just a different kind of fun.

Dear Murray,
you continue to serve the E9 community, despite your physical handicap. Well done.
At first I thought the guy was 23 years old, but I now understand that he has had an E3 saloon for 23 years. (How can one have had such a car for 23 years and not tried, let alone owned a Coupe at one stage or other). "It´s never too late....".
So you did him a great favour, and you had some fun yourself. All the better.

I am concerned about the average age of the owners of these cars. 25-35 year old guys seem much more interested in modern German and Italian cars. Impossible for them to do any work themselves, and probably for anybody if they (which is very unlikely) decide to keep them for 40 years, like Murray has done. Sofar I have had my father´s old 2800 CS for 30 years and two of the Jaguars for 28 and 24 years.
This summer I spent a good 20 mins talking to a 24 year old, with his somewhat less interested girlfriend, about these cars. He came up to me at the golf club car park, where the Batmobile recreation was parked. He knew a lot about the E9, and agreed that they were good value for money and that he had toyed with the idea on a few occasions.
Personally I don´t even want to be seen in, or associated with, a modern sports car, esp. not a Ferrari or Maserati.
I think we have concluded that the average age of the Forum members is around 50-55. This needs to be lowered in my view. I think it´s similar in Germany, and probably reflects the fact that we grew up with these cars when they were daily drivers for the lucky "few" (30.000), like my father.

Yes, I’ll have to admit, there was quite a grin on my face driving the BLUMAX yesterday. From the moment I buckled into the aircraft style seatbelts to the time I set the parking brake, I was truly impressed with the performance of the BLUMAX and can understand why you have owned #16 for soooo long. The purr and power of your 3.5L M30 and twin Webers was intoxicating and the 5 speed short-shift, though a challenge for me at first, was an experience that literally blew me away. BLUMAX never waned and only wanted more with every opportunity to open up. The fluid prowl of BLUMAX only comes from a prideful owner who appreciates a driven and well-maintained vehicle coupled with tasteful enhancements.

It was truly an honor to get to know the BLUMAX for a couple of hours, but the real enjoyment was hearing your inspirational vignettes of the travels you had with him. I look forward to the next opportunity. The only disappointment was pulling away in my original E9 drivetrain, but that didn’t last long as I soon settled back into what I’ve grown to love over the last 23 years. When the time comes to overhaul, I know what I want to do.

Take care my friend and thanks for sharing a day that I’ll never forget.
