E9 friends,

I am reaching out for guidance in the finish of my ac retrofit :

What is the correct position of ac facdplate and center console gearshift cover?

Does the cover sit above the faceplate or are the parallel?
Is the cover shorter for ac than non-ac?

I am trying to fit this with my non ac car
Thank you
Dominik

The shift console goes in first, and the face plate fits under the bottom of the center air vent on the top, and contacts the console about 1/2" down from the top. In my car, before I changed to a five speed, there was a quarter round covered in vinyl installed between the top of the shift console and the face plate to prevent stuff from falling into that space. I think this was factory correct for a/c automatics.

Shift gear surround shown is for non A/C Console. Shift gear for A/C console has a much shorter back plate and sit above the faceplate.

thank you for your responses!
So the console sits on top of the "leg" of the face plate like this:

and the AC console has a shorter front part than the non-AC - here is mine showing 71 mm:

could somebody guide me please and give me the measurement for the AC-console, so I can shorten my spare one accordingly.
thank you!
Dominik

Acording to your massurment 61,8 mm at non AC

Sorry been to fast, don't reconize the AC

The ones I have seen are kind of like this. The curved piece is to cover the gap between the faceplate and the console.
Maybe someone has one to give you a better picture.

I have done some further research and had some help from Gerhard on the German forum:
the center piece of the console is just 33 mm at the front part.
I had a spare console in store so I cut it to appropriate length and test-fitted, this works!

Well, curiosity let me dismantle my shift console (well knowing that it would end up cursing this installation when trying to put it back in place again)20240523_094945.jpg
It's a '74 AC manual version.
The shift console sits on the edge of the lower AC-panel20240623_170849.jpg20240623_171051.jpg
There is a triangular wooden strip covered with vinyl, attached by screws to the rear side of the console 20240623_171018.jpg

stabilising the console as well as sealing this passage.

Thank you Thomas - great way of documenting! Would you be able to take the measurement of each part for reference? I will then remodel the triangular part accordingly.

Hi Dominik,
I will ask my carpenter to rebuild it, will send you one piece!

of the first 2 images, the one where the face plate is more recessed is correct. it should not be almost flush with the console sides as in image 2. @TomHom is correct with the trim piece

....and here:
plenty of wooden strips with blackened face side:20240630_162423.jpg20240630_162409.jpg
In case you want one, 10€ plus shipping.
