I saw one of Larry Chen's videos.. about a 1970 2002 BMW in SoCal, and while searching for the video, I found this:

I love that motor.

Larry Chen's video is about the "Son Of Cobra" 2002 built by Paul Lefevre. In the video I saw a SoCal Vintage BMW tag hanging that said "Woodley Park", so I hope to see this car at one of the Vintage shows.

I realize that these mods might offend the purists among us, but I have to admire the time and talent that went into each build.

On a Friday evening I found myself revisiting this idea of lightweight cars while simultaneously texting a friend in NorCal.. he dropped a little atomic bomb into my brain with a text message "Son of Cobra is working on a carbon fibre E9." Whoa. Mind explosions! Is Erik pulling my leg??

Here is the Hagerty / Larry Chen video I refer in the previous post...

Lefevre makes three carbon fiber bits for E9's, listed for sale on his website:

Oh yes.. something is coming to life quietly in the background... then I found this Petrolicious video and something hiding in plain sight... what's that just behind him?

I see an E9. There's a shot of the rear, hiding behind a roundie, Paul's signature Marchal headlight mod (which he did on a 1602 and 2002), and the carbon fiber quarter panels leaning against the wall, waiting to be finished.. that sure looks like the area where the bumper wraps around the car... and that looks like a Ferrari side blinker off a Dino... that little circular orange signal.

Edit: I made a mistake (red text above). The carbon fiber panels I uploaded on this post are not E9; they appear to be 2002 panels. I've attached a side photo of the honey badger vehicle, for reference.

The green & white vehicle (a resto-mod level build) has a S14 motor in it, along with a custom carbon fibre air plenum, it also has an ECU and EFI (note fuel rail). The honey badger (daily driver) vehicle has and much simpler configuration. Shots of the engine bays...

In the videos, Lefevre talks about weight minimization.. I imagine that comes from his surfboard shaping skills.. always seeking the best possible performance and removing any unnecessary features. In the first photo, note the extensive drilling to remove as much weight as possible.. radiator mounts, hood hinges, doors, etc... later in the videos they show other examples.. drilled handles, doors, even the rear window mount.

My good friend has purchased the CF roof, hood, and trunk lid for his 2002 and is very pleased with the resuts.

@HB Chris is right, Paul is a very nice guy. I emailed him about the fit/finish of his 2002 hood/trunk lid, and the net-net weight savings. He told me 50-60lbs weight savings and excellent final quality.

I am so tempted to buy this stuff for my S14/2002 project, but first I need to find a good body/metal guy.
