The lack of rust proofing in our coupes is almost a cult status and after reading threads that frowned at the thought of washing a coupe and the prospect of watching it rust away have prevented me from bringing my project of the last two years a 74 reg CSL out on its first drive, a beautiful spring morning presented itself today and i decided this was my chance to bring my car on a 24km spin to work, the car handled perfectly and all was as it should be, i parked behind my office and went about my daily chores.

This is where things go horribly wrong!! at about 1pm the skies decided to unload a serious quantity of water, with me unable to move i had to wait until 5pm to bring my project through rush hour traffic in heavy rain, i had visions of water seeping into every cavity and untreated metalwork i was unable to get at. Yet again it handled the inclement weather without a hitch. i am at present sitting in my garage awaiting the onslaught of the tin worm!

Thank you for your past horror stories for bringing me to this place.

Joe

Joe, when I am caught in the rain and it does happen, I wait for the next dry day. Then I drive it hard, looking for hills to siphon the water from one end of the many cavities to the other hoping it flows out. Don't know if it works but worth a try.

Put her up on jack stands, take off the wheels and get under there with a hair dryer.
You should have it set to rights in two or three days, no worries

Just drive the darned thing and enjoy it. If you worry about all the things that can happen to your car you'll miss out on what drew you to it in the first place!

YMMV

+1 just drive it again and air it out for a while. Fortunately after we're gone we can't take rust with us either!

Many thanks for the responses to my delema, I suppose I fully except that the car is to be driven and not go through life as a trailer queen, and agree that I can not take it or nothing else to greener pastures.

To quote (from a character) of one of my favorite writers, "Perfection cannot exist in an imperfect world", so there's really no point in trying to fight it. Besides, even rust has a raison d'etre...

Here you can always drive it for a week-end to Arizona and any molecule of H2O would leave the car. You can also do there a great engine degrease as they still use products banned here. I did it with the Cabrio and the engine bay looked like factory.

I know, it does not help much if you are in Ireland...Maybe drive to Gibraltar and on to Ceuta.

Mother Nature

Same exact thing happened to me...in Southern California.

I drove down to Newport Beach from LA one weekend with the weather report saying nothing but golden globes and clear blue skies. On the way back to LA it hit. Hard.

To add insult to injury my wipers were in need of a serious blue pill. They were simply not working.

Truthfully? It happens. There is a big difference going out driving in rain on purpose versus having a situation hit you that's out of your control. I think most of it is a guilt feeling versus fear.

The next day I drove up to Malibu (twice) in very clear weather (funny how rain clears it up the NEXT day) and all but forgot about the day before.

Drive it like you stole it.

well joe,

in the heavy-all-day-rainy basque country, i can see you as a twin soul in your disgrace (it has been 2 months pouring water over our heads at a rate of 10 to 30 liters per sq.m per day)

skies here are merciless, exactly as you describe, you can start a wonderful journey in a beautiful new born sun, and end it in dusk, water and dirt

for that it was made the weather forecast predictions based in CFD (computer fluid dynamics) among other unexplicable delicacies, but you know we have shepherds here, and now and then is worth a chat with these gentlemen

anyway, calling february spring it is probably too bold on your side, ;)

i know how you feel, you have all my simpathy

I take great comfort in knowing that there is global sympathy for my pain, the suggestion to bring my CSL to southern california to dry out is fanciful at the least, Northern spain is closer but at this time of year probably wetter than Ireland, as for the optimistic views on spring weather it does start here on the 1st of february and i am forever optimistic.:-D

Install Lokari fender incerts and your worries are almost over. I don't stress anymore if I get caught in a storm.

Hey Joe,

where abouts are you in Ireland? I got caught big time coming back from Fishgaurd last September - i just let it dry in the garage and as someone said take it out on a dry day soon after.

I keep telling myself its only a car and i wont worry about it when im dead but i still struggle to use it on account of weather as i cant face restoring it again!

Rohan

Hi Rohan
I live outside Cork City near the coast, have been afraid to bring it out since monday last, i might venture out again tomorrow as the weather has got very dry these past few days.
