I just noticed that BMWChris is selling the middle grille part from his 1974 e3 (Classified - Parts).
The picture shows THAT CAR has 4 black slats!!
So, we have that 1974 e3 with the 4 slats, and the December 1974 e9 with a 5 slats.
Oh yes, by the way, my '74, #278, has 5 silver slats! But, I'm the 4th owner of the car, and the 2nd owner, who had it refurbished in 1990, could have had a new grille installed - just because he liked it that way ($$ did not seem to be an issue to him, looking at all the receipts etc. for the $35K he spent on body and interior refurbishment/customization). However, I doubt it, as he was into 'black' on this car, even having the aluminum trim around the windshield and rear window painted flat black, as well as new black grilles for the rear of the hood and the side 'vents'. Thus, I tend to think this was the OE grille on the car.
Yep, I'm a firm believer that Hans 'picked the grille of his choice' after taking a couple of swigs of Hofbrau Haus.
