Hi,

I've been looking at these cars for a while and getting close to buying.

(IF I’ve posted this in the wrong place, please correct and let me know…)

Most are in Germany, but as I'll import to Spain I’ll get charged for the privilege - last quote was around 5000 euros.

Looking here for local cars is proving tricky, prices are much higher than most other European countries (for cars in general) - guess having scratches/dents/no maintenance history increases the value? However, more chance of finding cars with less rust.

I know it's not easy to judge a car by it's pictures, maybe someone on here will be able to point out good/bad points?

1. DE 3.0 Blue/Gold with broken A/C, all original – but was sitting around in storage for 20 years. Brake lines/rubber hoses/etc. replaced when put back on the road. Also, was a 3.0, but engine died and owners paid for new 2.5 engine instead due to the Oil Crisis years back. 20000 EUROs

2. DE 2.5 cs Red – 1975 – looks nice due to recent repaint (2013), has 5 speed box (fitted 2013) – not sure what’s hidden under paint, owner says it was good, no rust work done, just old faded paint. 17000 EUROs

3. NL 3.0 Silver – Auto, Dutch car with a restoration done in 1999, still looks good apparently. 18500 EUROs

4. ES 3.0 White – Spanish car, with A/C which is needed – not too much info, but looking at this car next week. 19000 EUROs

5. DE 3.0 Ice Blue – lots of pictures here, looks like it’s not hiding much? 20000 EUROs

I think they are all overpriced but will see what happens to the price when I go to view with cash…

A/C is important– it gets hot where I live.
From my research, no one in the UK specialises in Aftermarket Air Con.
I know the US has much better support for old cars, although mostly Ford/Chevy/Dodge etc. – anyone know of a company who could supply parts to retrofit A/C in an e9?

Thanks for any info offered up.

James

The red one has some careless overspray - caution there.

A/C parts are best sourced from fellow members. Time consuming and pricey, but ultimately the best option imho.

The first Blue one looks like one to walk away from.

Interesting options. Drive them and see how they feel. Then do a reverse auction.

5 speed may be more important than AC I think.

Gernstetter - yeah, it's 001 - spoke to the guy selling it, he took it in part-exchange for a camper van or truck or similar. It's near Cologne. Do you know more about it?

Nicad - was thinking that, but it's 1 of the 2 that hasn't had a respray so thought maybe easier to spot the rust - which it obviously has.

The repainted cars could be hiding more? Or...should that be...are definitely hiding more!

Steve - umm, i've asked a few times for more info on the respray (bills/photos etc). Owner either doesn't understand me as I'm using Google Translate, or ignoring that question entirely. I noticed the paint wasn't brilliant - not a full doors/bumpers off job.

And Bez, yep seems to be the general line...i get the message and will check, and check again.

No negative remarks on the white one yet - which i hope is a good thing as it's 1 of only 3 in Spain i can find.

Thanks for now, will update with any new news.

Photos are great but we are using up a lot of bandwidth on this site, better to provide a link to a photo sharing site perhaps?

hi, i keep my readiness to talk to you on the phone about spanish idiosyncrasy on cars (i.e. what "perfect", or "excellent", or "fully restored" may mean in spanish )

BTW, the white spanish car seems to be in good condition, some care and maintenance has been made on that car, i.e. original bmw belt for the AC york compressor, bislteins, new carpet (not the correct colour, but...), seems to be clean of evident rust (but photos do not show the critical areas), ...a nice find,...

The Spanish car for 19000 Euros (26500 USD) seems correctly priced to me. Very fair deal.
Happy hunting.
