Hello Gruppe. first the question.>> Is the neutral safety switch on the auto trans adjustable?? <<

I had to jiggle the shift lever previously to get it to start...now jiggling the shifter doesnt work so I jumped a couple of wires to the driver glove box and start it from there for the time being, but Too tired to go under the car to monkey around with the switch if its not adjustable.

TRIP report...After I put the webers on, adjusted valves, new points, plugs wires, belts, trans and pinion seals headed out for 1500 miles to the ewest coast. Average fuel consumption seems to be about 13litres/100 km. Havent ben over 100 miles an hour til i get new shocks. But its is nice and fast. No over heating even running all day in near 30 degree C and /or pulling up mountain passes. Didnt need the aux fan once! Only emergency pit stop was blown upper radiator hose. The car let me know with a small bit of water on the windshield. When I pulled over I was able to cutoff the broken 3 inch section, stretch the hose back on, reclamp and drive to thee parts place. Where I took off the bad hose and went to their hose section, found one that resembled mine..cut off the excess of the new hose to fit the coupe, new clamps, anti-freeze and off again.
Great cross country trip in an awesome sports coupe. Now to get my registration and plate(if you remember my manitoba VIN sage?) I need to safety it again! So Safety switch?? any one?? TIA

When I had lots of play on the automatic I had that issue. Play was completely removed
by fixing the linkage under the car including a missing or broken circlip I recall.

Thanks Arde.
The no-start from key issue was rexolved with a new starter relay. I used the orange top Bosch Relay. I think I have 7 of those orange relays in my coupe now, including fog light and aux fan relays. I think I am going to have to find a way to mount them inside those period correct tin can style relay housings.

I had a look at the linkage and there is NO bushing left in there at all. Some time ago in my bavaria I remember fixing this issue with a piece of rubber hose.

It looks like the is minor adjustability in the tranny switch. Still have play in the shifter until the rubber bushings arrive. I'll adjust it then.

Fire in the hole!

After almost 3 years I am able to move my car from $torage to close at hand.

Any update on the original subject, ie the neutral safety switch?

I have the same problem and winder what the fix might be. Was it the linkage? And if so, how did you fix it?

The neutral safety switch attached to the trans rotates and iirc you can also adjust the length of the linkage rod. Pretty sure in my case All I had to do was rotate the switch to the correct orientation.

It's been awhile but my linkage may also have been missing circlip and or bushing.

Once you get eyes on the switch it is pretty simple.

There maybe some info here

Great info there restart, thank you.

I was looking at those diagrams and I could not find the safety switch however. Is it a simple electric switch like the brake light switch? Can you give me an idea of where it is on these diagrams so I know what to look for when I'm under the car?

Thank you

Bo

Left side behind bell housing.
Looks like this.
It looks like you may or may not have to remove that 13 mm linkage bolt to access the two other bolts for the switch at the back of the switch.
If you loosen the 2 bolts holding the switch from the back you can rotate the switch back or forth to the right spot

They sort of all look like this...ish

Apologies
iPad has naming issues and can only post one pic at a time. iPads call all the images. Image.jpg.

Kind of a drag

Trial and error.
Easier with a helper. You could put it In Reverse and move the switch till the back up lights come on. Or in park or neutral, there maybe a relay you can hear when aligned.

Basically, note where it is in refeence to the shifter, pivot the switch plate and check at shifter again. Repeat til all functions occur at the correct time.

Came across this in my manual the other day

Not sure how clear the image will come through if you can't read it let me know I'll send you a pic

This is from an older e30 manual
