As suggested in earlier posts, I cleaned the on/off switch and although the rheostat does not work, the A/C now has slow fan (at end of twist before click) and high fan as before.
I found the resistor beneath the right headlight cover, took it apart and re-soldered the connection, as it had deteriorated.
The A/C worked for about twnety five minutes then the fuse blew again.
The auxiliary fan did not come on and I guess this is the problem.
Any suggestions for my next steps?
By the way...thank you for the help so far.

Do you mean the fuse not the resistor behind the headlight cover? I also cleaned/resoldered it - this is for the aux fan and if it blew it means your fan is drawing too much current. There is a Hella can relay down below the ignition coil which controls the aux fan and is fed by this fused wire from the battery, it screws into the body. Mine was fried so I replaced it with a generic 30 amp relay with identical connections from O'Reilley Auto for 7 bucks:

This made my aux fan work. If some other fuse blew it's likely your compressor clutch or fan motor/switch is drawing too much current. Double 02 salvage has a used switch for $50, likely what you need.

The "fuse" behind the headlight is in a plastic tubular casing with single post male ends.
When opened we noticed that one oend of the soldered wire was not connected and it was re-soldered.
I will change the Hela relay as my next step.
