Below is a picture of little Magnus currently and I was wondering if there was any consensus on adding an air dam to go under the retro-fitted 72 bumper in front. I think the car looks pretty good (for me having done most of the work) as it is and I'm not specifically looking to add the dam, but as I do little upgrades there might be considerations to be made if I planned on adding the appendage.

Thanks,

Your car looks Great....I think you are done. I prefer the clean look on the front end.

I like the look of an air dam though I've not driven one. There are several to choose from., some are deeper than others. Having experience with fiberglass, I have found most of them to be constructed from mat glass, perhaps with some fiberglass cloth overlaid in some areas. I would have preferred an air dam completely made from hand laid glass cloth. The mat glass is just there for bulk.

The pro: it looks great, there may be some small benefit to high speed handling.

The con: it's expensive. fiberglass is brittle and you can easily crack it or scrub it off on a road obstruction or curb, normal driving and road debris will put dings in it. You have to drill the front valance to install, providing another unneeded opportunity for rust to start. Although many of us could handle the install, the dam will need paint that is beyond the scope of many of us.

Your car looks great. You've apparently taken good care of it. I suspect you'll go with the air dam.

My '69 Polaris coupe is set up exactly likes yours, same height, same wheels, and I've been thinking the same thing. I would like some kind of airdam/spoiler but I don't want to go with a big low ground scraping thing. In the meantime I haven't done anything...

Airdams look great on CSLs in mid-air on the track. Otherwise I go with the designer's original intent. Why put a small snow plow on the front of one of the most beautiful schnozzs around. Steve Strong opinion, just mine. No offense to the dammers.

having a coupe with a front air dam - i like the 635 version. i think it depends on which angle you look at it though - you can easily make a case for and a case against. i have always thought that the nacht or atlantik looks better without (most times).

the coupe is looking beautiful ... keep looking at it a while and then decide.

I like the air dam and bumper look. The air dam helps with stability at highway + speeds. Cost of air dam and painting is about $1,000, I bought mine through VSR1.com, at the same time that money will buy a lot of gas. Your decision ultimately.

Agree with Andrew, the CSL like air dam does help at higher speeds. I don't have the issue with driveways and parking berms but the painted fiberglass is prone to chipping, etc. Best to have some of that flex stuff added to the paint or better yet, use some of that clear film stuff to cover it. Short, answer, I prefer the air dam.

Thanks all, for the opinions and the compliments- I think for now I will just file it under one of those; hmmm, let me think about it, but my top speed so far is only around 75, as I'm still breaking in and fine tuning all the suspension and steering stuff and my furthest drive so far is only 50 miles, so maybe after a 500 mile drive I might feel different. BTW, on dual carb (Weber) cars what is a reasonable MPG range?

Thanks again,

As long as your plugs are brownish grey, dont worry about the mpg, we drive 70's era cars. My triples deliver worse than my F150 4 door truck.

On another note, I am taking the old girl on a weekend jaunt through Cajun country, maybe I will track the mpg...nah....

where you headed Steve ... might be able to recommend a place to eat if you are going far enough ... really into cajun country.

Please do, we're going to a B & B very close to lafayette, and will possibly go down to Avery Island and visit Tabasco etc.

I am thinking about this as well. Airdam plus bumpers that is. Is it possible to make the airdam removable? Is only held on by screws right?

I would go for the CSL one, the 635 looks too modern. One

One reason to go for Airdam is that I imagine it will help keep the car cleaner underneath.
