A thread in the parts section got me thinking about some differences that I noticed with the screwdrivers that I have. I'm wondering if this is just variation between years or does one belong in another car.
First the handles of the larger one, the closer one is from my coupe's toolbox that I'm told is original.

and then the tips

Bert is the expert when it comes to screwdrivers but I think variations occurred over time. I thought earlier ones had the 1.0x7 on the handle, yours is on the shaft. I even had one with a 7 on the blade end.

I swear less profound specialties have their own departments and deans in the University of California system.

Bert for UC!

I am new to the E9 scene but I must admit I am perplexed by the whole red-handled screw driver thing. It seems that they are soooo precious that they probably won't be used, and, they have to be taken out of the tool box when travelling. I'm sorry if I'm insulting anyone's obsession but can somebody explain this to me please.

I've got two sets in two E9s one of which has a Heyco GREY handled screwdriver with a reversible combination bit!!! Is this even rarer or have I been horribly ripped off and I should feel totally distraught.

You have the very common later years screwdriver likely from an E21

For me it's not an obsession, just fun to hunt down the period artifacts. For obsession, take a gander at the 356 and early 911 crowd

Whoa, what happened there? I got edited out with an innocent word. Does this mean I can't say Alfred Hitch****? ****!, looks like I can't.

It's a drag, isn't it? When we gather for ****tails and talk about pea****s, ****atoos and ****er spaniels it gets rather ****amamie. Reminds me of the Howard Stern bit about pussy willows...

troublemaker, part II

And so we don't leave the smaller screwdriver feeling insignificant...

closer one is from the "original" toolkit. Note the rounded crown on the newer one.

and the plastic shaft retaining mechanism (left) compared to the spring metal (right).

And, as Stan or Duane can attest, I'm probably the last one that cares about red-handled screwdriver originality. I just thought that I would put this out there to keep it interesting.

You guys please keep this up, my retirement plan includes all the red screwdrivers I collected while parting out cars years ago . . . all removed and VIN's recorded to match!

That sure would be an interesting display of style vs. vin # for the record...

Is this the original one? This was out of my 72 cs and will be selling it and giving forum members 1st choice before it goes on an auction site.

Wow, that one belongs in a safe deposit box! Extremely valuable.
Make sure your insurance carrier has Lloyds as a reinsurer, they may not be aware of the risk concentration they have in your car.

you just need some old turk telling you the facts of life. when the car was born, it was given red (screwdrivers). it got out in the world and some lost their red. climb a little higher and you find even less red ... until one day you're up in the rarified air where you don't know what red looks like and can't find any more red. welcome to the layer cake son.
