Has anyone found a good way to paint the alpina centres black on the 14/16" wheels? Should i just buy some fine line masking tape or is there a better idea? Thank!

I made a bristle board cutout that extends 2mm beyond the recess to refinish mine. I was at the BMW museum in Munich over the summer and it appears the car they have has as imperfect a paint job as mine.

I took my time and carefully masked them with tape, have a couple pints and before you know it they're ready to go. I did mine at the edge, not beyond like Bob's which I believe his is how they originaly came but difficult to achieve. Maybe do both-make a round cutout then lay skinny tape on the perimeter to get the clean edge then follow with thicker tape/masking.

Thanks for that, cant find what a bristle board is online. I will just buy some fine line masking tape and have a go. Will post any learning this weekend!

Bristle board is what I call it from my school project days. Just a thick paper a bit like cardboard similar to what you would make a mat in a picture frame.

I had a local vinyl shop make up four masks using dimensions I provided with the 2mm overlap. The hardest part was putting the mask in place with the same overlap all the way around but with care that went OK. We taped off the rest of the wheel and sprayed the centers with gloss black. I asked the local paint supplier about using semi-gloss but he recommended against it, sighting difficulty with using the flatting agent and getting a consistent look. We used PPG acrylic enamel.

Here are a couple of images.

I used the fine-line tape (3M 06300) on the wheels for my E28 B7 Turbo. The wheels had never been refinished and being a real Alpina car, I had a fifth wheel for a spare which had spent it's whole life in the trunk except for the three years it spent sitting in a warehouse before I bought the car. The black center extended 3mm past the recess so, at pretty much 3mm, It worked out well.

Unfortunately, you waste tape doing this, but the way I did it was as follows:

1. Run a line of tape around the recess.

2. Run a line of tape right next to it.

3. Add the rest of your masking. Don't forget to mask the inside of the hub bore and the mating surface.

I used this for paint:

It has one of the best nozzles out there, lays down really nicely and wears really well. I've used it on other projects requiring a similar sheen and it was very close to the sheen of the original finish. I applied two coats.
