Hey guys, I just picked this up as part of a package deal. Different to all of the other alpina 4 spokes I've had as it is far more dished. Also the alpina logo is on the bottom right, along with no date stamp on the back. Early solid 154 type momo boss. The horn pad is also slightly deeper to account for the deeper dish. I'm thinking mid 70s wheel, but no idea what it would have originally been off.

Any thoughts?

Hi @nosmonkey,

That is what the Alpina four spoke looked
like on the early wheels. Based on the Momo A38. I had one date stamped 1978, and I think you can find them stamped back to 1976. If you don’t have a stamp, it is going to be a slightly earlier wheel. Probably around 1974/1975.

Alpina had at least three leather versions (plus wood versions). The first had the logo as you see it. Another had a stamped logo on then bottom right (not engraved like yours). The last had a very precise engraving on the upper right spoke. This is the most common example you will see.

I presume that the A38 is an evolution of the rare (and expensive) four spoke Alpina from the early 70’s. As you can see it had a lot of dish.

You can also see the wheel that pre-dates yours in this lovely CSL that was recently completed in Australia.

Thanks for that @Markos

Must be an early one. Pulled the hub off to see if there was anything behind there too but nothing.

I sandblasted and painted the hub whilst it was off, conditioned and sanded the leather and dyed and sealed it. Looks much better now, going to see if I can repair the torn section at the top as the original stitching is perfect.
