Alternator upgrade

yes, bought an 85amp internally regulated one from BNR on eBay. It's been great for 4 years but just replaced it with another before driving to the Vintage, will keep the old one as a spare. Fits perfectly as it is rebuilt oem model. Run a D+ wire from new alternator to the D+ wire in the harness to the regulator. Tape off the other wires and keep the regulator in for orginality if desired.

i did this on my bavaria years ago. its a simple (single) wiring change ... just don't remember what that is right now.

i think i remember hearing that if you use the e28 / e34 alternator + PS bracket that you can use a newer alternator for an e28 0r e34 ... which has more amps + a newer design. they all hung off of the M30 engine ... so they fit, its just making sure the electrical connectors work.

stock is like 45a so 85a powers my driving lights and a/c simultaneously no prob.

Nice! 85a just seems so sub par. I used a 160a dodge durango alternator in my Jeep. Overkill but it fit with some persuasion.

Yeah but I have an impressive custom stereo system installed by the previous owner :D

I have the Delco like Mike (actually copied it from his post!!- Thanks Mike). I used the pulley and fan from the OE alternator, as the pulley on the rebuilt one I got did not line up perfectly. If you choose this route, be sure to get one with the two lugs 120 degrees apart, not 180 degrees.

Wow, reminds me of the 14 year old in Texas that was arrested for bringing a fake clock that looked like that to school. He demanded $15M$ so I am sure you can milk that stereo for a couple Million.

I had that done to Athena in 2012 at Motorsport Connections in Winston-Salem NC. Alternator failed on the way, put out an APB on here and the 2002FAQ. Billy Revis got the call and ordered a new alternator knowing we needed it. When we arrived ay the shop, the car died as we pulled into the lift bay. We'd been running on battery power and a failing alternator for 24 hours. Made a lot of friends that year.

I know this is an older post, but would like to add a current part # for the alternator that fits.

AC Delco 334-2312A or 88864368 (Worldpac).

One application for this unit is a 1990 Chevy Berretta GT with A/C.

I also sourced a new GM 3-wire plug from Advance Auto Parts, part #PTA1047

The alternator fan may require a shim and upper mounting bracket clearanced for the alternator fan. These are minor reactions based on fitment of the unit installed today.

I got an int regulated alt from an E12. Required a smaller bolt, but no biggie.

So I am looking to replace the alternator on my E3 1972 Bavaria. The older untreated alternator is the one just removed. The rebuilt alternator has the bright red. They are not identical. Can someone explain to me the difference?
Original Part Number 1211277248, 1231164407, 12311352308 for my E3. Bosch part number on rebuild is 0 120 489 606 608 with I think is a later model.

Appreciate any help.
