Newby here. Does a 72 have regulator built into alternator ? I’m having alternator light fade in and out. I wiggled wires including blue one but it’s still intermittent. I had garage put tester on. Battery only a year old. Tester on second try read regulator fail. Car starts right up every time. When night driving and headlights on alternator light gets brighter and remains on. Second question anyone know decent mechanic near Elkhart Indiana

72s should have an external regulator. Big thing next to the relays near the battery.

Be sure to clean your grounds and battery posts.

You can try to find a new regulator (not sure, do they sell them?) or get an E12/early E24 alt w/a built-in regulator.

Just need to get a smaller bolt.

I think BMW sells them as well as the usual resellers but they are probably the new, solid state version.

I wouldn’t just use a smaller bolt without changing the bracket or you could get movement.

Did you read the output voltage? At idle it should be ~13.5, higher RPM should be ~14 and change, post-regulator.

I switched out the alternators in both the 2002 and 2800CS for internal regulator ones (and increased amps also).
Never looked back....

Factory location for E3 horns. No covers over the headlights so the horns recede above the lights when the hood is closed.

An AC Delco CS-130 alternator is virtually a bolt-in replacement. 105A and pretty cheap.
