There is a CSL currently on Ebay which I am sure many are familiar with. My question isn't particularly about this car but cars with Salvage Titles in general. As some might know this amazing, unbelivable CSL has a salvaged title. Owner claims it was minimal damage which makes absolutely no sense to me. In order to give a car a Salvage Title insurance companies base it on the cost to repair and if repair costs are over 70% of the retail value of the car, if it recieved frame damage, airbags deployed then it is salvaged. My question is why do so many people claim their high value cars were salvaged because of a small fender bender? if this CSL had a small fender bender and for arguements sake lets say it would cost the insurance company $5,000 to repair a $50,000-$100,000 car, why would they pay the owner $50k-$100k to Salvage the car rather than pay the $5k and fix it? Am I the only person puzzled by this? I have been involved in small fender benders and unfortunatly had a car that was considered a total loss and believe me an insurance company will always take the less expensive way out. Only time an insurance company will salvage a car with a small fender bender is if the car has such little value that repair would make no financial sense.

"In 1988 it previously incurred minor damage to the right rear quarter panel. Title was salvaged due to insurance reasons."

Back on those days you could have any e9 including csl for a song -hence the title.

Cheers Andy

Chicane,
I really wish I could see some photos of the crash damage, but none exist, making the claim suspect. I took pictures of my minivan after the babysitter scraped the entire side on a concrete pillar. So, when I sell the car, the buyer can see why the entire side was repainted.
In and of itself, the title doesn't bother me, but without photos, it does. I am sure an adjuster took some photos in 1998, but why are they not with the car? (in the glovebox, e.g.). Someone can buy this car, then register it in Connecticut, which does not issue titles for old cars, and the salvage title may disappear. Scary.

This car has been for sale before here, I believe, but I cannot find the original thread.

This car was for sale by Ron P for $39,500 down in Orange County. It was also on one of Evan Esterman's emails for $45K. I have no idea what it went for. I had some interest myself at $39K, but decided against it.

What do you mean you have no idea what it went for, it's still for sale?

You can see the repaired right rear wing in the pictures. The valance is completely the wrong profile. Pity thty didnt replace the wing - then I would have no issue with the salvage.

As has been stated here at times these cars had little value and indeed insurance companies are not as straightforward as has been made out. It is often not worth their while dealing on a case by case basis so even if it would have been cheaper in identifiable costs to fix the car for the owner it is often easier/cheaper overall to just write a cheque.

I believe this car did change hands and the seller is a flipper. Car has moved from Orange County to San Mateo.

The person who took the video posted on you tube can be seen in the reflection on the car, and it is not Evan Esterman, nor is it Ron Perry. Does anyone know who the owner of Golden Gate Classics is?

Plenty of pics of the left rear, but not the right rear 1/4 panel so it is hard for me to see these flaws.

See the sixth and seventh pictures down. And the c 48th for the inner rear right rear quarter.

Golden Gate classics is different from Bimmerbrothers.

Golden Gate classics is Anthony (Fjord3.0)
Bimmerbrothers is Evan

Golden Gate owns its inventory. If you have questions PM Fjord 3.0 Im sure he will be more than glad to answer all your concerns.

Very suspect that there are no photos of the damage, even more suspect that there are no work orders from the shop that did the repair work. I can understand not taking photos but what happened to the repair order?

I am sure if you are 100% serious about the car, the seller will show you whatever proof you need. My problem is that you seem to just want to publicly bash the car for your own super ego and you are not, nor will never be a player for a CSL. If you are so "suspect" about things on this car, why don't you get all of the wicked thoughts in your head dispelled by actually looking at the car. I find it ironic, but so typical, that only two people on this thread have ever even seen this car in person.

If I sound bitter about this car, I am. I didn't want my car on this forum since I have already had my experiences with this group and none of them have been good, but the car made it here anyway, which after your usual bashings, I had to ask the moderators to remove the thread. The asshat comments cost me a potential sale on the car that I had been working on for two years!!!! This cost me a ton of money and I don't appreciate it at all.

Some of you should really (I know it's hard) think before you hit the keyboard about what you are saying.

I especially like the link to Evan with the seller!!! That was a laugh for me, as they do have offices close to each other, but have never met!

In closing, the car is what it is and was probably, at my best estimation worth somewhere near $5000 when the accident happened and the insurance company didn't want to take any risks so they totaled it. My partner and I found another car (2275015) which has much better provinence and we purchased the car from the original owner. We wanted to sell #395 in order to restore #15, so we wholesaled it to the current owner.

I don't understand why the moderators allow things like this to happen, as it isn't allowed on most public BMW forums. It is pretty pathetic, and the folks who take part in it should not be allowed to do so.

I've seen this car and Ron, it is beautiful. By the way, salvage titles were all the scam back in the 80's, this car happens to be one of those that didn't get the title cleansed thus it has more truth to the story than others.

Hello All,
Just to clear the air. I am not affiliated with Evan or Bimmerbros. Not sure what he did to earn his reputation but please do not associate me or my business with him. We share the same city San Mateo but thats it!

In regards to the CSL. It is a fine piece of machinery and well taken care of by Ronp. He only owns high quality cars and has built a reputation to his name and cars. If you have any questions about the CSL for sale I would be happy to answer them. You can pm or email me. Anthony

This is an E9 forum and what we do is discuss E9's and when things don't make sense we question it. I have seen many cars claimimg to have had minimal damage and recieved salvage titles and majority are lying about the extent of the damage. Your car was an example of a car that apparently had minimal damage and recieved a salvage title and being that it was an E9 I felt it appropriate to discuss my concerns in an E9 forum. FYI I have been a licensed property & casualty broker (auto insurance) for the last 12 years and have also been involved in the purchase and sale of many cars and experience has taught me "most" lie about the extent of the damage to sell their vehicles. That being said, I am sure the seller is a reputable seller and you does not fall into this category. My apologies if you feel I am hindering the sale and will remove this thread if the seller wishes. I don't know the seller and harbor no ill feelings towards him. Please let me know and I will cancel this thread I started if it is possible to cancel it.

RonP please chill out, you act like I am taking food from your mouth. It was a discussion and not meant to hurt anyone. If you are not pathetic like the rest of us then please do not contribute to this thread and look elsewhere. You are not mightier than us so please, you can express your thought without calling anyone pathetic. Are you the owner of the car being discussed? If you are let me know and I will erase all my comments on this thread and ask others to do the same.

Just a Thought

If someone is seriously considering buying the CSL in question and is going to spend a large amount, would they be persuaded not to buy the car because of a comment a random person made in a forum? I would think not. I would think he would probably approach the sale with a body expert to review the repairs and a certified mechanic. Maybe even a specialist from a restoration shop. Just a thought, that is all.
