Another new steering wheel

I'm now on my fifth steering wheel. Hopefully this one will stick (I should have bought the damn Petri when I had the chance!). It's a 360mm leather wheel made in Italy by a company called APS which I've never heard of.

I reminds me of the old rare Alpina momo wheel and is much thinner than the Nardi it's replacing. I really like the slim feel. So far it's really great. I can't believe how excited I am by something like this.

Thought I'd share some photographs of previous wheels:

I never liked this wheel for some reason. I always thought it was cheap looking. The shiny metal had a habit of shining the sun right into my face. Putting it on ebay.

Wood Nardi. looked the part but it was too uncomfortable (it was wood).

Didn't Goldilocks confront similar problems?

Glad you found something comfortable, functional and good looking. I had a wooden Nardi on another car without power assisted steering and found it uncomfortable compared with other wheels. First tried driving gloves and eventually covered the wheel with a lace-on cover over thick padding. It was low on looks but high on comfort. (Unfortunately, it didn't stop someone from attempting to abscond with it and mar the metal when their hex wrench must have broken.)


One thing rarely discussed is the length or height of the steering wheel hub/adapter. I mention this since I may have tried the same Petri wheel only to discover that the hub was so tall that it made reaching for the turn signal stalk an unnecessary chore. The next hub removed from another BMW was too short, so that the two stalks (signal, dimmer, wiper) were engaged with virtually every wheel turn. Of course, the hub depth or need for a spacer may depend upon the depth of any wheel dishing.

Ultimately settled on a Momo. (Petri fit on an E10) Not certain, of the exact model, but the padding (however minimal) can come in handy.

throw them in the water, they will float over to me in roberts creek,haha i can see the lights in comox from the beach by my place...

re: another new steering wheel...nice wheel, the logo looks a bit out of proportion tho, imnsho....i am surprised at the popularity of flat steering wheels? mine are all dished. is that a safety thing??
 
I use a Nardi Personal wood rimmed wheel but with blacked out spokes, fortunately my power steering is still working. The wheel is slippery and the edges of the "spokes" may be uncomfortable at times. Still, compared to what was there, I'll keep it forever.
 
I like your new APS wheel, looks stylish and comfortable, good choice!

Reminds me of the first aftermarket wheel I used, a Momo-Retro, I still miss it, definitely felt more comfortable to use.
I think I have gone through 5-6 steering wheels so far, I currently have a Nardi with black spokes that really fits the look of my cabin, but I agree with few others that the 'wood' feel is not the best. May change back to the Momo someday

I can relate - I have mounted my fair share of wheels to the coupe. I go back and forth between leather and wood. If wood- wearing gloves help. My favorite is the mid the late 70's 4 spoke Momo wheel. They have a thicker stock and therefore easier to grab. Here's a restored Alpina one in my collection I have yet to use.

Agree on the wood wheel, my old Nardi is great for tooling around town and gets a lot of compliments but if I were to be driving more aggresively then I would go back to my Petri, but I love how the wood and spokes (Petri-esque) look and it does have nice finger ridges on the back:

I didn't care for the feel or the Nardi but I would love to go to a Petri but haven't found one yet. I installed a 15" Grant for now and like the feel but I wish they made it in a 16".
 
choosing a wheel is harder than it sounds

leather is nicer for driving far

wood looks nicer

chrome looks better

chrome reflects light

big is easier to turn

small looks and kinda feels better

etc
etc

but can you say first world problem? :)


For me I have an original wheel, a large wooden one (from 2800?) and going for a Momo Protipo for now.

I do believe a Nardi is in the future for me though. Just for show and city driving.
