I was told today that he was crushed under his car while working on it in his garage.
Found by his wife. I believe there is a fundraiser for him.

No news here, but a reminder to all of us that we're often only one simple mistake or distraction away from disaster when we're doing whatever it is... driving, working on cars, walking across the street.

Sometimes we get a precautionary tap on the shoulder, I've had a couple. Less fortunate, it's the big sleep.

Old guy walking down the opposite sidewalk from my office was killed last month by a car that went off the road, roller-coastered off three parked cars, knocked him into the parking lot and ended up half on/off the sidewalk. He and the car were headed toward each other-he say it happen.

Where I was a kid there was a sign on the quarry that said "Think Twice - You Only Live Once". That sign may still be there, it certainly still applies.

Alan was crushed under a car tipping off its jack stands 2 months ago. His wife luckily found him. She had put up a site to raise some money to help w/ the hospital bills, but it is down now. Let's all hope that he does heal and is able to enjoy this life. Or you can shoot him a pm on this board to wish him a speedy recovery.

Christ that's a tough break. While many people here got annoyed with how he used the forums, I had the chance to speak with him on the phone and he was a really nice guy. I wish him a speedy recovery.

I've had two instances under cars that scared the crap out of me. It's dangerous business.

Very unfortunate. And we have all been there.

Climbing under a car on jack stands is always scary.

There is a a second chance precaution I take by placing the wheels, when removed, flat at 4 points under the body. Should the stands fail there is a plausible crush zone. Belts and suspenders. I hope.

Wishing Alan all best

John

Alan is not accepting pm's, just tried

High quality jack stands - not the Chinese junk - then the tires, then the hydraulic still in place. And still don't feel completely comfortable.

+1 same here. the heebie jeebies come in waves and can't stay under there too long. Always a relief to get out from underneath and get the car on the ground.

Wow; that sucks. My car is on jack stands right now (with a scissors jack from a Humvee as backup), and I'll be underneath it again today and over the weekend as well.

I too avoid Chinese jack stands and floor jacks and power tools and hand tools and BMW parts, etc., etc. Don't trust the metals and/or the manufacturing processes.

There are a few pics on the internet of failed jack stands, but that is an exception to the norm. Most injuries are caused by the car slipping off the stand, or the stand tipping over. When you put a car on jack stands, always shake the car left to right. You should be able to nudge it hard with no movement. You also need to chock the wheels.

Harbor freight sells heavy duty solid rubber wheel chocks. I keep mine outside because they smell like a tire plant.

Horrible news, had no idea as, sending speedy recovery vibes!!

+1 for extra precautions: put wheels tires under car, use best jack stands possible, leave hydraulic jack up but without load and locked, and once up, give lifted car a good shove/shake to confirm balance and stability.

Be careful coupers!
