I don't see the (phony) side grills on the front fenders, I'm with Stevehose, this looks like an E3 conversion.
Other "touring" conversions I've read about include the E30 (supposed to have been made during off hours by factory personnel, then taken to production by the factory), and an early 7 series conversion by some euro coachbuilder whose name escapes me. Surely there were others as well, such as convertible E9s but that's another topic entirely.
I still want to call them "station wagons" per USA parlance, maybe derived from "estate wagon" of the Brits. Back in the day I had a VW squareback (two actually) that I liked very much, but they drove horribly compared to my first 2002 that followed. Actually there was a '70 VW van in between, which drove even worse, but didn't hurt me and was sold after six months. Ahhh, the days of my misspent youth...
